Pirates of the Southern Seas

Dreams

Dropbear was a dreamer. Not a dreamer of petty dreams such as dreams of wealth acquisition and being really nasty to people. But a dreamer of castles, and Princes and dragons and those are the best dreams of all.

But Dropbear can also be crazy and evil and shy and jealous and do horrible things. In other words he is a bit like pretty much everyone.

This tale is unusual because I can tell you the ending: Dropbear tried to repent of these evil ways. He wanted to stop being an evil, dreaming anti-hero. He wanted to do some good. But why did Dropbear want to be selfless and good? That needs some explanation.

The Freedom Force Pub

Dropbear was a Commander of the Freedom Force. He had fought missions and done his best, although his best was not always good enough. He loved his country and his mates, and he liked his new found adorableness. But he wanted more.

He wanted to be a ruthless irascible pirate like Pontius, or a conniving and handsome Spymaster like Gerakken, or a super-organised and respected Supreme Leader like Ray the Wanderer, or the President of the CariElf Fanclub like MM77, or a loveable and wise wombat like Wild Wombat. But he was none of those things, and never would be.

In other words, Dropbear was feeling a bit down and a bit jealous, and maybe a bit unloved. To stifle a sob he took a swig of a rather nice Kiwi pinot and looked around the bar. His current mates were here: a small group, loyal and true. The nightly chess game had ended with Bakka beating Ajm37 again.

Dropbear knew that he and Hurls would drink each other under the table before this night was through: he had found a good Shiraz, which Hurls would appreciate. But Dropbear also had another agenda for this night: he wanted to unburden his soul. And who else to do that with, than one’s mates?

As well, he had an ending to make: and a new beginning too.

Earlier

Dropbear’s Private Hell

Dropbear dropped the message crystal in disbelief. The moving image winked out. Yet, he picked the message crystal up again, and this time, replayed it, time and again. Afterwards, he had some thinking to do. With a heavy heart, he entered his battleaxe, the CariElf, and took her into space.

An Evil Pirate

Dropbear was evil and loved nothing better than to bribe and wheel and deal.

He measured the pirate with his eyes. The pirate could be suborned: Dropbear could see that in an instant. The question was at what cost? And with how much effort?

The gold, reflected in the pirate’s eyes, was a sparkle that held no lustre. But the pirate could not see that. “Arr. Gold. Bright and yellow, hard and cold. Heavy to get and light to hold.” The pirate squinted at Dropbear. “What must ah do, evil one, for the prize ya offer me?” Dropbear gazed back, with a forlorn look: “The price is high. But not so high that one such as you would not pay the price. Betrayal, spying, murder and mayhem. And…especially information. A bargain at any price!”

The pirate nodded. “Oh yes, a small price to pay for gold in the hand”. The pirate spat in his other hand and offered it to the bear. “Let’s shake adorable little bear”.

Dr Quinn’s Consulting Rooms

Dr Quinn was misunderstood. Long had she practiced and with quite good results. True, she had often misdiagnosed Pontius, but he made her nervous. She could not diagnose under pressure.

She cackled wildly. “Ah raven what shall we do? Our small collection of animals has dwindled to naught. How shall we continue our experiments, eh?” She whacked the dissection table with her scalpel. Dr Quinn’s raven fluttered and squawked. Quoth the Raven, “Nevermore!”

“Why Raven, do you admonish me?” She laughed gaily. “Animals of the woods we need, or better yet, talking animals! Yes, large talking animals. Or dare I dream…a man. MUHAHAHAHA”. She laughed a little insanely and drew the scalpel across her palm, with tenderness and a little madly.

The raven looked at the red, red blood in the flickering candlelight.

CariElf’s Temple

He walked down the boulevard, the memories almost overpowering. The fights, the tragedies, the characters, the Pres! The Temple shone with such a light as he approached: a light of clarity and goodness.

How did I leave the path of goodness so quickly, wondered Dropbear. How easily evilness beckons and then sucks one dry. He had fought his monsters and lost and could never return to the fold of the Viscountess. Or perhaps he could. No man can truly know the course of time, he thought.

But not yet. The pirate had been a useful spy on the Ship of Doom. Dropbear now had verification of the claims that had been made in the message crystal. “The burden I bear is too great”, wailed Dropbear. “The knowledge that I have, I can no longer hold and stay sane. I must confess, if only to my mates”.

Dropbear took one last soulful look, and left the Skowbo swamps, forlornly.

From the shadows the Pres watched him leave: “You shall return Vice Pres” he murmured. “And she shall heal your soul. Goodbye for now adorable, little bear” he shouted into the dank, swamp air.

The CariElf swept up into the sky and departed the planet, sadly.

Jimmie and Peggy-Sue

Peggy-Sue nodded enthusiastically. “I love Star Trek, and especially Captain Janeway. The power, the command, the authority”. The inflection on the last word made the waiter wince and move quickly past the couple’s table.

Foolishly, Jimmie wasn’t listening: “Yes and science fiction…”
“Oh, Jimmie. I love SciFi, the goofy stories and…and…all…that stuff”.
Jimmie was in seventh heaven. He had finally, he had truly, found his soul mate.

The Ship of Doom: The Officers’ Mess

CypherPax was being led out again. Mrs Pax stood at the door of the Officers’ mess, waiting patiently. She clutched a rolled-up magazine. Pontius shuddered: he knew how much pain a rolled-up newspaper could do: let alone a Marie Claire!

“Ah mate”, he said, “How’s the eye?” CypherPax looked from his good eye, silently imploring. Silently he mouthed ‘save me’. Pontius shook his head somewhat sadly, the Paxes had not been married long, and Cypher still had some learning experiences to suffer.

Cypher slumped as the waiters led him towards his doom: “The festering has stopped” he muttered, just before the door closed.

Pontius shook the Pirate Times and settled down for a read. The plush armchair enveloped him. Gerakken sat down beside him, somewhat stiffly: “Pontius, where was that banging coming from…” Pontius shook his head again: “Ya don’t want to know”.

Some minutes later, Pontius gasped: “Would ya look at this Gerras!”, inclining his head towards an article that only he could see.

Gerakken looked up sharply. He had his reports to flick through and was tiring of Pontius’ constant references to popular culture. “Who’s done what to whom?” he asked, concisely.

Pontius was oblivious. “Why, huh, gee, that’s funny…” He petered out. Gerakken was wise to this strategy, but could not help himself. “What, what, WHAT?”
Pontius looked up puzzled. “Um, gosh Gerras…settle down”. Pontius read out the article, which was directed at pirates and so was short and in very simple English. They looked thoughtful. “So the mutants are in turmoil! How odd.”

Jimmie’s Wedding

Young Jimmie’s wedding was spectacular. From the badly dressed bridesmaids, to the photo session in the botanical gardens, every piece had been carefully planned and executed.

Jimmie was beaming. “Gosh Mr Pax, what can I say. It has been magical. We fit like a hand in a glove. Why, my Peggy-Sue may be much older than me, but she has been the best thing that has walked through my front door since sliced bread”. Cypher looked as if he was about to say something, but he felt a presence behind him. “Of course lad”.

Peggy-Sue showed her engagement ring to her friends, Mary-Lou and Janeese. “Yea, it’s nice. It’s unusual. It’s different” they said in unison.

Pontius was leering at the women from a safe distance. He quickly looked around for Mrs Pilot who had momentarily disappeared, before leaning towards Gerakken. “What foxy ladies they are!” Gerakken looked at Pontius quizzically, before he coughed.

Mrs Pilot came up and saw the direction of Pontius’ gaze. “Ponshie!” She studied Pontius’ face very carefully: “They are pretty things aren’t they?” Pontius looked utterly innocent: “Oh, um. Actually, I hadn’t noticed”.

Pontius had learnt that lesson early and well.

The Ship of Doom: The Spymaster’s Coterie

‘Judge a man by his questions rather than by his answers’, thought the Spymaster. ‘Hmmm. I wonder what that means?’

Gerakken looked around his coterie. Spies and weasels, undercover men, standover men, Yor droids and chambermaids. A motley collection to make him proud.
“What news, my friends?” Before they could answer, Gerakken coughed suddenly: his flu was getting much worse.

Dr Quinn and Gerakken

Gerakken could barely lift his weak head. The Elven flu had taken hold of him, firmly.

“Dr Quinn, do you have aspirin?” Dr Quinn looked at Gerakken disconcertingly. “Ah, neurophen then…?” Dr Quinn began to take her blouse off, button by button, all the time licking her lips. In, out, in, out: darted her long, sharp, red tongue.

Gerakken blanched with fear. “Dr Quinn, I am a happily married man, what of your morals?” Dr Quinn shrugged: “Once I had morals. Once I was young”. The last button was undone.

Gerakken squirmed and thrashed. “But what of your ethics as a doctor? What of your doctor’s registration?” The blouse came off: “Once I had ethics. Once I was registered”.

The too-handsome Spymaster began to sob. He knew he should have taken Pontius’ advice and seen Dr Spock instead.

Peggy-Sue

Peggy-Sue sobbed. “There, there” said Mary-Lou with a hidden grin.

Peggy-Sue could not be consoled: “Mary-Lou, it has all changed. Since we married, Jimmie has changed.” This revelation shocked even Mary-Lou.

“If I’d known that the flowers and the nights out every night were going to stop, I’d never have got married!”

Finally

The Freedom Force Pub

Dropbear began his tale slowly, as if he lacked courage to continue.

“Mates, the story I tell you is pitiful, but it is not your pity I seek. This night I shall unburden my soul: and in truth I seek your understanding. I have not been lucky in love and long have I wished for the joy of marriage. The pleasure of sharing hobbies; discussing science fiction books; playing computer games together; all of those things that married couples do”.

The gathered mates nodded solemnly: they too wished to see every single, happy man married.

“Now I am evil, you know that. But I am a little crazy too. Once I lived on Skowbo, and held a position of some repute in the Viscountess’ employ”. The gathered group stirred, for Dropbear rarely spoke of those halcyon days.

“Ah, the adulation, the poetry, the chocolate….and Gerakken. Always Veteran Gerakken”. Dropbear’s chill voice became icy. He stifled a sob. “That handsome, common pirate tormented me. Why, do you know he won every award for his prose? Every one! I quoted Wordsworth for sheep’s sake! Do you think they knew. Or cared?”

Several minutes later Dropbear pulled himself together with some effort. Wombie looked tormented at the strain that showed on Dropbear’s face, the tears matting his fur. He felt Dropbear’s pulse, but let him continue.

“Now a pretty enough lass once visited the Temple. Oh, she was a game one. What a horn bag”. He chuckled. “The times we had...the laughter, the drinking, the late nights cavorting…”
The gathered mates looked both repelled and fascinated.

“But it didn’t last, why, it never does, does it? She left and never returned. I never heard from her again. That is, until this week! The shock! Her message told me all that had happened those many years ago….I have verified what she said of course”

Dropbear straightened and looked ahead without emotion. “This is why I tell you I am leaving the Freedom Force, to join the Pirates”. The group gaped, numb.

“Yea, it is something I must do, to make amends. I was not there when she needed me. She has since married and does not want me now. But our son…”

“You have a son?” asked Wombie quietly.

Dropbear looked down, he could not meet Wombie’s sad, knowing eyes.

“Yes, Peggy-Sue had our son. He was born in the dark recesses of a cargo freighter. The freighter was raided soon after by pirates and our kid was kidnapped. She traced the ship, which did the deed: The Ship of Doom! This is now my destiny! To become a pirate and find my son: to give him the father he never had!”

The gathered mates began crying and hugging as one.
There had been an ending, but a good beginning as well, at least that was how Dropbear felt.

Postscript

Wombie packed his bags thoughtfully. Mates stick together he thought. Hurls came in, and the rest, carrying their bags. “There is one other thing that I didn’t understand last night, Wild Wombat” said Hurley with a frown. “What is Dropbear’s special power?”
Wombie grinned. “Haven’t ya worked it out yet? Why, it’s glamour. When he looks forlorn, ya have to adore him. What a nifty power to have!”

The soon-to-be pirates nodded, thoughtfully. Of course.

Yeah, great story! I'm just worried about that small, psychic creature getting incinerated at the beginning. :SURPRISED:

Purple psychic ducks are out of season, I guess. ;) Don't worry, you're safe. Wombie's on a roll again. :)

Well, that is about it for my little visit. I just got to say that things wouldn't be the same without the Posse members around. I am off again for another couple or three days.

The Ups and Downs of Flipping

Good Breeding

‘Hmmmm’ thought Killa, darkly. ‘Breeding will out. My mother was right!’

Killa stared agog at the ruckus that was the Sergeants Mess. Pirates were molesting buxom waitresses, there was a fight next to the fire, a chair had gone through the window, and no one was listening to Killa’s tinkling of the ivories. He was giving his all to a superb rendition of the Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 1 in F minor. Killa vexatiously slammed the piano keys in C sharp but no one noticed that either. He stormed from the Sergeants Mess with repressed fury and made his way through the Ship of Doom to the Officers Mess.

In the Officers Mess, Hurley looked up from his newspaper, and took the pipe from his mouth. “I say Mr Killa. Nice night, eh?” Smoke curled around his suave moustache.

Killa threw himself into a high-backed chair and waved at the Mess waiter for a cognac. He turned to Hurley with a scow. “Mr Hurley, I have tried to bring culture and refinement to the ranks, but do you think that they care?”

Hurley opened his mouth. “Ah…”

Killa went on, “They do not! It’s like trying to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. Well I’ve had it up to here, I tell you”. He put his paw up to his neck, a couple of feet above the floor.

Before Hurley could get a word in, a strange man came up to them. “Stiff upper lip lad, what”.

Killa looked up perplexed. “Have we been introduced sir?”

The man held out his hand. “We have not, sir. Jon Pyter Jonnes-Smyth at your service”.

Killa was impressed, for Jon Pyter Jonnes-Smyth had actually been able to pronounce the exact spelling of his name. “And are you new to our piratical brethren Mr Jonnes-Smyth?”

“Indubitably. I am on a sabbatical and my Dame suggested I get experience with…shall we say, a different side of society”. He gave a mocking laugh. “It’s pleasant to see that there is yet, at least, one sophisticated litteratus on this boat, what”.

Killa puffed up with pride.

Jon waved a hand at Hurley and turned back to the koala. “I had thought I would be spending my entire time with mendicants and uncouth riffraff. It is a pleasure to see I was wrong. Share a Port with me old bear?”

Killa nodded. “With pleasure.”

The long evening was an enjoyable one. Hurley had long gone to bed, when Killa finally yawned, placed his sherry glass on the table, and said good night to Jonnes-Smyth. Jonnes-Smyth grinned. “Well if you have the time, I am taking over from EBZ as Chairman of the G.R.O.S.S. Proper English and Elucidation Committee, should you wish to make a difference in this coterie”.

Killa looked thoughtful. “Shouldn’t that be the Proper English and Elocution Committee?”

Jonnes-Smyth brayed. “Yes, but with this lot, there is more need for elucidation than elocution, what. Hahahahahahaha. Snort.”

Killa grinned, “Er. Yes. Haha. Well I must get my beauty sleep. See you around”.

“Tally ho, what”.

The Pub: A Week Later

“And then Wombie….hahahahahaha….he said ‘And she looked at him libidinously’. Hahahahahahahah”.

Wild Wombat looked perplexed. “And that was funny?”

“Wombie! That was hilarious! It must be the timing. I can never tell jokes. But he is so sophisticated. He has such Olde World charm”. Killa sighed. “Sometimes I wish I was European. They have such style and élan. I really look up to Europeans…why are we always around Americans? You know what they say about Americans! They are…”

Killa suddenly waved at a man across the bar. “Jonnes-Smyth. Jonnes-Smyth, old man. Over here”. Killa looked concerned. “Oh, Wombie, I don’t think he likes to drink at the bar. Will you excuse me?” Killa slipped from the stool, grabbed his tweed jacket and bottle of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, and scampered towards the table where Jon Pyter Jonnes-Smyth had plonked his Crème de Menthe On The Rocks.

“Bye” said Wild.

“Tally ho, what” said Killa, without a backward glance.

Flipism: A Fortnight Later

“And so that is the raison d’etre of my philosophy, if you will. My good man, it has never led me astray. Well, what do you think old man?” Jon Pyter Jonnes-Smyth cocked his eyebrow at the koala.

Killa’s eyes were as big as saucers. “It’s magnificent. I understand completely. I am filled with junesequa for your philosophy”.

“Yes, well. Quite. Anyway, my good bear, here’s my book on the philosophy, what”. Jon handed to Killa a bound book. Killa eyed it avidly. It was titled, ‘Flipism: A Structured Philosophy for Well Being and Success’.

“Now, I would love to gift my book to you, my good man, but unfortunately, my juvenilia costs credit to disseminate, what. I have warmed to you nonetheless, and I can part with my little Lexicon for a very reasonable price. Mate’s rates, those common Westies would say, eh? Hahahahaha. Snort”.

The next day, Jon Pyter Jonnes-Smyth took the last flight to Earth. Killa saw him off at the spaceport. “Au revoir my dear bear” said Jonnes-Smyth, fondly.

“Bourgeois” said Killa waving forlornly. Killa sighed as the spacecraft leapt into the sky.

The Cafe D'Amour: The Next Day

Quack looked into the Flowergirl’s eyes. They were wells of sparkling sapphire and emerald. The Nun’s habit highlighted her sparkling jewels and created a well of longing in the poor duck’s breast. Romance had been long in coming to the brave, little gander. Military training had taught the stalwart duck to shoot straight and drink beer, but buttering up the fairer sex was another thing entirely. It was hard. Very hard. He started to stammer and blush.

Wombie’s voice whispered into Quack’s ear through the hidden earphone. “For God’s sake don’t stammer. Look cool. Say, ‘In your eyes, the light, the heat. In your eyes, I am complete.’

Quack looked up and stroked Flowergirl’s quivering hand. "Flowergirl, in your eyes, the light, the heat. In your eyes, I am complete."

Flowergirl put her hand to her breast and looked abashed. “Oh, Quackie. You say such gorgeous things”.

Quack put his hand to his ear. “Flowergirl, you make me want to be a better man. Wherever you go, whatever you do, I will be right here waiting for you. Whatever it takes, or how my heart breaks, I will be right here waiting for you."

Flowergirl blushed. Without warning though, her face suddenly hardened and her mouth formed a sneer. “But what of Rainbird. Didn’t you hold a candle for that …woman”. The accent on ‘woman’ cut the mood like a knife. A very bitter knife.

Now, Quack was not the fastest gander on the block. Yet even he picked up the subtle change of tone in Flowergirl’s voice when she spoke of Rainbird. He hesitated and rubbed his ear. “Um, she meant nothing to me”.

“But didn’t you say to her: ‘We’ll always have Paris’?”

Quack gave a quack of embarrassment. “Yes, but I was never sure what that meant. Um, but moving right along, ah, em. She’s just a turbit”. Flowergirl frowned. He suddenly cocked his ear. "Look, I guarantee that we'll have tough times. And I guarantee that at some point, one or both of us will want to get out of this thing. But I also guarantee that if I don't ask you to be mine I'll regret it for the rest of my life. Because I know in my heart, you're the only one for me."

“Oh Quackie”.

"I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible."

“Oh yes, yes, my love. When I hear your words, when I hear how you make ordinary words become sparkling jewels, I know that you are the duck for me. You say things that sound so familiar and yet resonate in my heart. It’s as if another speaks through you from on high. You are a duck among geese. But what of the Nunnery? What of my life as a Prophet? How can I put that aside? For I am about God’s business!”

“AW to hell with all of that! I love you and you love me. Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow creeps in this petty pace…no, sorry, um, shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?”

“What?”

Quack burst into tears, took his wing from his ear, and pocketed the earphone. “Flowergirl, I am not a duck of polished words, but I know this, and this I can say to you. Come live with me and be my love, and we will all the pleasures prove, that hills and valleys, dales and fields, and all the craggy mountains yields. And I will make you beds of roses, with a thousand fragrant posies, a cap of flowers, and a kirtle embroidered all with leaves of myrtle. The shepherd's swain shall dance and sing for thy delight each May morning: if these delights your mind may move, then live with me and be my love.”

Quack stood up and looked at the floor in shock. “Flowergirl? Flowergirl? Flowergirl!”

The Gazebo: The Next Day

Killa poked his head around the door. “Mrs Pax?”

Mrs Pax looked up and placed her maths book on the table. “Yes Killa?”

“Um, is there any more Pinot?”

“Well, let’s see”. Mrs Pax went to the cellar and opened the rather cute wrought-iron gate. “There’s a rather nice Zinfandel and, let’s see, yes, here it is. A bottle of sparkling Summer Wine. Oh, and is this a scrumpy? Indeed, it is. Why, I have many happy memories of having a scrumpy with the girls”.

“Oh, is that the time? I must get back to work, Mrs Pax. Perhaps I don’t have time for another drink”. Killa hurriedly trotted up the path to the gazebo.

“Now what are we doing?” Killa put his paws on his hips and eyed the hole.

Cypher brushed his sweaty hair from his brow and straightened slowly. This bloody garden was going to be the death of him. “Guys, the Council have forced me to demolish the pond. Seems it’s against Council regulations. So we need to fill it in and plant a garden over it. Here’s a shovel”.

Killa looked at the shovel. “And you do what with this?”

“You shovel soil with it”.

Killa snorted. “You’re not serious! That’s labouring! This is a good opportunity to practice flipism”. Killa took a coin from his pocket and tossed it in the air. “Heads I shovel, and tails I sit in the gazebo and watch”. The coin came down and with a flourish, the koala peered at the still coin in his hand. “Tails it is, of course. Sorry old man”. Killa trotted into the gazebo and sat next to Wild Wombat.

“So Wombie. What’s new?”

Wild looked up, picked up his white wine, and rubbed his forehead. “It just never stops. Quack is courting again, so I have to study and make notes”.

Killa rolled his eyes. “What is it this time?”

“Advice for a hard-to-get amour. What do you think of these tips. I’m a bit rusty, what with being happily married for years and all. Um, these are some tips I’ve prepared to date:

One: Send her flowers unexpectedly. Choose a bunch of her favorite flowers of her favorite colors or ask your florist (man's next best friend) for suggestions.
Two: Write her a check for a million kisses, and let her take it to the bank.
Three: Have your song playing on the stereo when she returns home from work or errands, and whisk her into a spontaneous dance.
Four: For a change of pace, eat breakfast by candlelight or have dinner in a spa.
Five: Fill her car with red balloons.
Six: Have a "play date" once a month, where you get away together for a day of fun.
Seven: Fill her answering machine or voicemail with romantic messages.
Eight: Draw her a bath sprinkled with rose petals, and light some candles.”

“Wombie, don’t go on”. Killa flipped his coin and peered at it. “Yep, as I thought.” He stood up and waved at Wombie. “All the best with Quack. He does need all the help he can get. I’m away”.

“Bye” said Wild, returning to his book.

“Tally ho, what” said Killa.

The First Wive’s Club: Two Days Later

“Gloria, that Quack is heading for a fall” said Mrs Wombat with a grimace.

“I know what you mean Edith”, agreed Mrs Pilot.

Mrs Wombat sipped her hot chocolate. Mrs Pilot sipped her sherry.

Mrs Pilot took up her knitting. “Knit one, pearl one. You know my thoughts on Flowergirl and especially in her role as a charismatic prophet. They don’t mix”.

“I know, I know. Where does it end”.

“And until that duck is married I can see nothing but trouble. Nothing…”

“But trouble?”

“Exactly. Trouble”.

“Well it could be worse. At least the duck is in with a chance. Now that Jaws…”

“Jaws? Nothing that a good orthodontist couldn’t fix. I’m sorry, but rotting food in one’s teeth is never a turn on, if you know what I mean”.

“Couldn’t agree more. I have found a delightful little nurse though, that may be just the ticket for Jaws. Very quiet, and respects her mother”.

“Oh, I know the one. She always dresses in grey?”

“Yes, they do refer to her as the grey nurse…very nice girl”.

“Oh. Look over there Edith. It’s Mrs Steel isn’t it? Escorted by Mrs Pax? My eyes aren’t what they used to be I’m afraid. Yoo hoo! Gertrude!” Mrs Pilot flipped her right hand ninety degrees and back. It was a subtle hand movement, and yet expressed an air of insouciance Mrs Wombat and all the girls deeply envied.

Mrs Pax escorted Mrs Steel to the bench where Mrs Wombat and Mrs Pilot perched. The four women eyed each other.

“What do you think of the Ship of Doom dear?” asked Mrs Pilot proudly.

Mrs Steel blushed. “It’s so big and polished. Why, we only have little cutters in comparison. You must be so proud of Mr Pilot”.

Mrs Pilot rolled her eyeballs dramatically. “Dear, the day I’m proud of Mr Pilot is the day he sells that bloody computer”. Her sherry glass snapped in her very strong right hand.

Mrs Steel gasped. “You too? But surely after your long marriage, you have worked out those little things?”

Mrs Pilot leaned towards Mrs Steel. "Some people ask the secret of our long marriage. Let me tell you. We take time to go to a restaurant two times a week. A little candlelight, dinner, soft music and dancing. He goes Tuesdays, I go Fridays."

Mrs Steel sputtered. “Some things are the same no matter where you are! I’ve found that the male is a domestic animal which, if treated with firmness and kindness, can be trained to do most things."

Mrs Wombat chuckled. "Well in my experience, give a man a free hand and he'll run it all over you."

Mrs Pax frowned at Mrs Wombat. “Or worse things”.

“Oh yes, quite. Sorry”.

Mrs Pax sighed. “That’s OK. I suppose the upshot is that if you've got them by the balls their hearts and minds will follow."

One of the women sighed. “Yes. There is that. It’s just that when I eventually met Mr Right I had no idea that his first name was Always."

The three women looked at the other woman. “Is he really like that?”

“I’m afraid so. Still, I should count my blessings. It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog”.

“Hmmm”.

Mrs Pilot shushed the other girls. “Is that Gerakken and Killa Koala coming this way?”

Killa Koala was talking with Gerakken. They noticed the women and Gerakken reared back in horror. Killa looked unconcerned, paused, flipped his coin, peered at it, and then strolled over to the coven of women. Gerakken fled.

“Top of the day to you. What’s new with my favourite girls?”

Mrs Pilot reared back with disdain. “Mr Koala, the last pirate who referred to me as a ‘girl’ didn’t live to regret it”.

Killa laughed, unwisely.

“And where are you going, with that parcel Mr Koala”. Mrs Pilot looked at the package the koala was carrying.

Killa held the heavy parcel up. “It’s a new computer for the Captain. The absolute latest model. You’ll see less of Mr Pilot from now on I’m afraid”. Killa laughed again.

Mrs Pilot hissed. A slow venomous hiss. The other women glared as one at the koala.

Killa suddenly recalled some of the conversations he had had with the Captain. Now, Killa was not that bright, although he thought otherwise. But he was often perceptive. However, the philosophy of flipism taught that all choices could be safely and intelligently made by the principles of flipism, which always led to the best outcomes. Killa was in two minds. One half of him said flee, move out of town for a month or two, and try to live this down. The other half said, try to lighten the mood. He flipped the coin, peered at it and sighed.

“Well girls, things could be worse. Why just the other day I was chatting to the boys…”

“Which ones…”
“…and when…”
“…and where…”

Killa suddenly felt scared. And when he was scared he lost all common sense.

“Haha. It was Wombie, and Pontius. Oh, and Cypher and Gerakken. Ah, can’t quite remember where and when…the library perhaps? Anyways, the boys were saying how fantastic it is to be married. Although we all laughed when Pontius joked that ‘I haven't spoken to my wife in years. I didn't want to interrupt her.’ And then what did Wombie joke? Ah, ‘If we take matrimony at it's lowest, we regard it as a sort of friendship recognised by the police.’ To which Pontius replied ‘Happiness is having a large, loving, caring, close knit family in another city.’ But Cypher really cracked us up with ‘A married man should forget his mistakes; no use two people remembering the same thing’ and ‘In my house I'm the boss, my wife is just the decision maker’. That had a ring of truth to it eh? Then Gerakken said ‘The inherent vice of capitalism is the uneven division of blessings, while the inherent virtue of socialism is the equal division of misery’. We didn’t quite get that one, but that’s Gerakken for you. Later on, Wombie pointed out ‘The hottest love has the coldest end’. Although Pontius came back with ‘In married life three is company and two none’.”

Killa stopped and looked at the coven. They were standing now and had taken a pace closer to the koala. Killa flipped his coin and eyed it closely. He looked relieved. “Time to go. Meeting the boys at the pub. Um, ladies? Ladies? Ladies! Nooooooooooooooooooooo”.

Oh well, I'll just add some nice high-culture poetry I saw written in... ah, I shouldn't say. It wasn't a very classy place. :p

Roses are red,
Violets are blue.
Give me a bit,
I'll always love you!

Pontius was in the Fellowship court representing his fellow pirates.

The honorable Theodin was presiding at the preliminary hearing.

THEODIN: I see you all are here to plead Guilty to the charges where's that Killa? Hmmmm. Well we'll just try him in absentia.

You have been charged with Murder of our emporer how do you plead.

Pontius: Why your honor, as you can see clearly. Emporer Ray is still alive. I ask that that charge be dropped.

Gengsta: Your honor, A reanimation spell does not change the fact that he's been killed at the hands of these pirates 8 times.

Theodin flips a coin: Hmmm heads, I'm inclined to agree with Gengsta here.

Pontius: But your honor, we killed Ray with the complete knowledge that he would be reanimated. Thus, with full knowledge that he wasn't really dead, how could it be Murder?

Theodin flips a coin: Hmmmm Tails. Case dismissed. Now as to the other charges.

1. Kidnapping of a flower girl in connection with freeing her from the geektrix.

Pontius: She came willingly. No one leaves the geektrix unless they wish it.

2. Kidnapping of a flower boy in connection with freeing him from the geektrix.

Pontius: Uh that was not our doing.
3. Practicing polymorphing without a license.

Pontius: Technically it's the transmorgifrier that does the polymorphing, not us.

4. Destroying Geektrix property.

Pontius: We destroyed mo property. We uh "salvaged derelict vessels.

Gengsta: Hold on those were vessels you derelicted!!!!

Pontius: We are not charged with that. Once derelict, we are well within our rights to salvage them.
5. Printing and distributing false D and D manuals.

Pontius: A printer's error. Were that printer not bankrupt, we would most certainly have recovered all assets.

Gengsta: Isn't it true Pontius, you set up that printer yourself and diverted its profits to your own personal account.

Pontius: It most certainly is. But that was done outside of fellowship space. =OP~~~~~~~~

6. Failing to play D and D. under the proper rules
Pontius: Well Ray himself declared free form D and D. You can prosecute me soon as you throw Ray in Jail.
6a. Inciting D and D geek riots.

Pontius: So we gave em a few swirlies. You can't say you didn't want to.
6b. Inciting coolness among d and d geeks
6c. Inciting genuine laughter among d and d geeks

Well Hey, Boys will be boys.
7. Having relations with the opposite sex and actually being cool enough to find a wife.
8. Bribery
9. Robery
10. Pornography
11. Murder and attrocities against Aliens
12. Being in possession of the one ring without a license.
13. Hobbit throwing
14. Using elven magic without a license.
15. impersonating an elf
16. impersonating a wizard
17. impersonating a geek
18. extortion
19. Failure to Brown nose the Gods aka the devs

Pontius: All these occurred outside fellowship space. Therefore, they are unprosecuteable.

Theodin flips a coin 20 times more ... Tails, Tails..... Tails. It came up tails 20 times.

Hmmmmmm I see no reason to hold you further. All charges dismissed.

Gengsta: THIS IS TOTALLY GENERIC!!!! A TRAVESTY OF GOOD LITERATURE.!!!! I WON'T STAND FOR IT.

The Pirates quickly leave.
Back at the doom the pirates are surprised to see Theoden walk in. "May I join you?

Pontius Why sure zzzzzzzzzzzzt.

KILLA!!!! Bwahahahahhaaah you mean?

Pontius: Yup. Got off on a technicality thanks to a lil more illegal polymorphing.

Quack: But what was all that coin flipping schitt?

Killa: My new flipping philosophy. Lucky for you guys it came out tails 20 straight times or I'd have put you away.

All: YOU MEAN YOU TRUSTED OUR LIVES TO FLIPPY BOY HERE AND A BUNCH OF COIN FLIPS PONTIUS!!!!! WHY DIDN'T YOU MORPH WOMBIE INSTEAD!!!???

Pontius: Relax...Pull that coin our of your pocket Killa.

The Pirates laughed when it revealed it had two tails on it. All except for Killa.

Pontius: Flipping is a great philosophy. Rigging the coin using a transmorgifrier, however, is even better.

Killa flipped a coin. Then suddenly decided to order a Budweiser instead of his usual. The Pirates laughed at this. Though Killa seemed unpersuaded.

Later, at the bar, the Gang notices a beautiful woman walk in.

"C'mon Killa go for it"

Killa: Yeah but should I use a line on her or be genuine?

The Pirates couldn't agree so Killa flipped a coin.

Heads its line, tails it's genuine.

fliiip Ztttt. Heads.

Killa walks over.

Excuse me maam, I happen to be lost. Could you please give me directions to your quarters?

SLLLLLLLAAAAAAAAAP!!!!

The Pirates laugh.

Another girl walks in...

Killa: I just don't understand it. This flipping isn't working out so well tonight.

Pontius to Wombie as killa goes to the bar: Think we should tell him?
Wombie I'm sure not gonna tell him. Oh here's another woman and coin flip coming.

Ztttttt. heads.

Killa: Hey baby. Welcome me into your life with open legs will ya?

SLAPPPPPPPPPP

Ahahahahhahahaha.

Theoden beamed back down to his home. Whoever had given him those tickets to wrigley's pleasure planet was most generous. Oh well, he'd have a back log of cases and he was sure to get the pirates in his courtroom again.
He turned on his TV.

"Hear ye Hear ye Hear ye, be it known that theoden has been removed from the bench for incompetancy in the Pirate trials."

Suddenly Theoden knew who those tix had come from.......
