I'm astonished you can find the grog.

Ya. Northern hemisphere or western hemisphere. The "northwestern" would be a quadrisphere.
North of what and west of where.

Well now it's my Canuck friend who's downing too much liquor.

Clearly that would be the conventional references, north of the equator and west of the prime meridian.
Grenwich mean time... Pompous English, declaring that a spot in their nation shall be used as the standard. The equator is chosen by nature, but the prime meridian is an arbitrary choice of man. Then again, the whole rest of the world has gone along with it, so whose fault is that? LOL You can call it Zulu Time if that makes you feel better. We DO need a common reference, and this one is entrenched, so... go along to get along.
As for beer, the Canadians have a much more laid back approach. Although in the USA we did get rid of Prohibition, we're still tightwads about the taxes. Go figure. Boston Tea Party was thrown over a three percent tax stamp, but now we'll jail any "moonshiners" who don't pay our exorbitant sin taxes. Thus no home breweries, very few small breweries, thin beer, etc etc. This ain't the country she once used to be. Of course, in most ways, she's better, so I won't complain.
Besides, beer is godawful for the health. Nothing turns to sugar in the blood faster than maltose. (Ever heard the term beer belly? If you want to be fat and die early, drink plenty of beer!) In this regard, the Canadians and Germans can keep their beer bravado. This is the one point on which I'm firmly in the camp of the French: give me a good wine! Or a decent wine, even. Red has the lowest glucose factor, so it's the best for you. I usually have a small glass of some kind of wine every day with my dinner. Of course, I've never been drunk in my life. Well... maybe except that one time. LOL Three cheers for moderation.
