The Statue
I want to stand in the town square,
I want to rust copper green,
I want to be a statue.
I want to be covered in graffiti,
A thousand names on my metal body,
Each name is someone who wants to be a statue.
Who can blame them,
the strength of my stance,
the intensity of my stare.
I'm surrounded by water,
A polluted water,
protected by marble walls.
I accept hard thrown coins,
the dreams and wishes of little girls and boys,
I try to grant them.
They want to grow up to have dreams,
their parents want them to be statues.
When the crowds return home,
the gate locked,
I remain.
The sun exits to leave me alone with the night,
alone with those who sleep on the marble,
alone with those who gather up the dreams and wishes.
They look for a dream they've lost,
a dream they need to have back,
Now any dream will do.
Dreams lay drowning in my polluted water,
rusting copper green,
now retrieved.
I can see much,
though only in one direction,
I can see that no one should be a statue.
