Beta 2 initial problems

Had a crash to the desktop, with no warning, about 20 turns into a new game. SmartException caught nothing and there was nothing in the debug.err file.

The only odd things I've noticed so far with Beta 2 are:

1. After a colony ship arrived in a system and I selected a planet for colonization it took almost a minute before the planet screen came up (I could hear the hard drive being accessed in the background).

2. Same planet had one of the "specials", in this case a pre-tech alien population, I chose the middle option, herd them into defined areas, and it took almost a minute before the "Done" button appeared on the screen (again the hard drive was churning before the button appeared).

What are your system specs?

Pentium 3 800 MHz
384 MB RAM
Geforce 4 4600Ti with 128 MB RAM
Adaptec 29160 SCSI Controller
2 Seagate Ultra 160 SCSI Hard Drives (15 GB each)
Windows 2000 SP3

The problem only seems to hit when there is a special on the planet. This problem didn't occur in Beta 1 and doesn't occur in Beta 2 when there isn't a special associated with the planet.

special on the planet?

It doesn't seem to matter. The same problem occurs no matter what the special, at least so far. It has happened with the following specials:

research01.event
production01.event
shipbonus01.event

Hmmm...we've changed around the Random Event Window abit to allow stary text and images to be displayed in it. Perhaps something with the implementation is causing the slowdown.

We'll look into it for monday.

same here about colonization. It takes several seconds
to bring up the intial screen, than the second screen comes up,
but the "done" button" does not appear for about 3 seconds.

I am also seeing the slowdown on colonization events and I have a faster machine. It used to be so fast that I could not tell it from instantanious. Now it takes about 2-3 seconds to bring up the event window and about 1-2 seconds to bring up the "done" button.

Hardware data:
OS Name Microsoft Windows Version 4.90.3000 (ME)
Processor AMD Athlon(tm) Processor AuthenticAMD ~1002 Mhz
Total Physical Memory 127.45 MB
[Sound Device] Name SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio
[Display] Name NVIDIA GeForce2 GTS (IBM)

My system is magus-like and I also feel a slow down but it's acceptable (1-2 sec..).
