Question regarding planetary defenses

Do they increase the defense rating of ships in orbit or do they make it harder to invade? And if it's the former, would the increased defense rating be accounted for when the game determines your military strength? If so, it could be a life saver late in game when the AI civs have Dreadnoughts and you're still stuck using battlecruisers.

My understanding is that it's the latter; Planetary defenses improve your odds when the troops are landing and you're rolling the virtual dice to determine the invasion attack/defense ratio.

Anybody that knows otherwise, or that can give detail as to how exactly the invasion ratios are modified, please chime in!

I'm quite sure those help the ground defenders. Even if it did help orbiters, I don't think your Cruisers are gonna be able to withstand Dreads. :)

No I mean from a civ deciding whether it should declare war or not, not a direct assault type of thing. Since you're military rating would go up, the AI will be less eager to feed you to their death furnaces.
