Alpha Centari (about at the level of Civilization 2.5 feature-wise), could use a revamp along the lines of Civ3(more detailed terrain and more detailed entities, e.g. with battle damage being modeled on ships and with dying soldiers actually dying, )+Civ4(3D + quick zooming in and out - for super detail).

Software is half art and half science... developing a truly new game is probably more art than science. "Moonshadowing" is easy with a 3D engine... it depends on where you set up your "light source"... now (I'm not at a computer with a GalCiv2 executatble loaded so I can check), the REAL TRICK is if it is shadowed based on the location of the Sun in the Solar System in question. But, I bet the GalCiv2 programmers aren't that sophisticated, because they would have trouble handling the case when there are mutiple light sources (suns) appearing on the screen at the same

I have a MOBILITY RADEON 9000 running on my DELL AMD-based laptop, with DirectX 9.0c, and my system crashes while LOADING (about 10-15 seconds after I hit NEXT from the CHOOSE OPPONENTS screen).
