I had the same problem - I fixed at least the graphical part by changing my settings - right click on the desktop, select properties, then the settings tab, then click the advanced button, then the troubleshoot tab, then lower your hardware acceleration using the slider. I had to change it a couple of times to find the right level. BTW to the developers, it looked like environmentalist was spelled wrong in the special interest section (needs a
