I don't think they're paid too much for the same reasons, there is a limited number of athletes that can play at that level. Therefore, hitherto, hence, economically speaking since there is a limited supply (of players), more will be payed for them by the consumer (GMs, owners). I think I read somewhere once where it could be an evolutionary thing: women with bigger breasts could provide better nourishment for their offspring, which led to healthier children, of which the females would have larger breasts and the males would be attracted to them (due to genes).
