I got the Dvd version of fedora core 3 but haven;t had much of a chance to try it out as yet, but if I don't like it for some reason, can mandrake upgrade it like Xp over 98, or does it have to be uninstalled first? A newbie question cos I've not seen any info on this

Most spam can be avoided...if you get tons of it in your email then your not protecting it enough. Up until recently I only ever received solitited mail from friends and family in my hotmail account inbox, with very little, if anything going to the junk folder. The reason being: I never enter comptitions or respond to "too good to refuse offers" on the net. However, since recently registering new software/hardware, etc, the spam has been com
Hi Brad, I do not subscribe to the OS wars because I've only ever used XP, and "which OS" is a matter of personal choice anyway, so who am I to criticise something else when I've not used it, as it seems "some" do. However,, whilst not so much envious, I am suffering Longhorn anticipation and in the process of upgrading my system to eventually accomodate Longhorn to run at its optimum, bearing in mind that OD is a part of computing life now and not co
you're lucky so far - to date i have received over 200 of these suspect emails in my junk folder, each is exactly 37kb and prompting the recipient to open it with either too good to refuse offers or notification of a major prize win, or personal information details that in reality does not exist. the problem is that some appear to be quite legitimate at first look, but i have noticed that certain sender names keep reappearing in totally unrelated subj
I had problems with Object dock and Nortons not liking eachother some months back, but i just upgraded to XP Pro and gave it another try to be delighted with the result - everything works ok now. So with the aforementioned, I feel that I have a complete desktop experience again. OD is a great program and soooo convenient to use. I began changing desktops with Desktop Architect within days of getting my first computer about 2 years ago, but w
Update: another day, another bombardment of dodgy emails! Is anyone else experiencing this: emails "supposedly" from reputable sites, and others with no previous connections sending supposed personal information in attachments? And therein lies the catch: an anti virus prog will detect nothing untowards until it's too late, when the attachment is opened. So far I've had in excess of 60 of these things in just 2 days and my paranoia levels are begin

right now - Jethro Tull "Aqualung" >"Living In The Past"> "Skating On The Thin Ice Of A New Day" Shortly: 3 CD set- "Best Of Cream" > "Blind Faith> Self Titled" Thanks, Iben, for jogging my memory, it has been a while. BTW, I went to school with Ginger Baker, amongst others. Later: Ten Years After - everything they ever did cos I'm in the mood for some Alvin Lee. Later, later: some Spinal Tap to add a bit of levity to my da
G'day, SSOne, a friend of mine and a niece have a Virgin version and recommend it highly, so perhaps you could look into it as an alternative to the dreaded Apple I still turn to my trusty ol' discman for portable entertainment, so I have no personal experience to share, but my niece sings praises about the virgin machine. <img src="http://images.stardock.com/wc/smil
Update: That was in my hotmail account and I've just found similar in yahoo as well, which I rarely use, if ever for email. I have to question: why would the mailmaster at yahoo send email failure notices to my hotmail account and visa versa. I have not sent a yahoo email in over a year, so yeah, be very careful and contact your own account holders personally if you've questions regarding your account details, etc.
Just went to check my emails and found several suspicious ones in my junk mail, supposedly from big name sites to inform me of login and password information. I became immediately suspicious when one containing an attachment about my "so-called" yahoo personal information changes had been addressed to another person and then forwarded to me. As far as I know, Yahoo and Hotmail, etc, do not operate in this manner. Whilst I do have Yahoo and Hotmail a
I use Theme Manager to assemble suites by firstly applying all the elements to my desktop and then clicking "save as" to have a set of ready made desktop environments of my own liking. However, whilst Theme Manager mostly completes this task without problems, sometimes it attempts to save the new suite but just hangs for a while and nothing happens. At first I thought it may have been an issue with a couple of ported MS Styles, but it applies those c
First there was rock 'n roll, and then came Led Zeppelin, the greatest band of all time, in my opinion. Yay, Iben, I like Rush too, Caress Of Steel, 2112 as well Roy Buchanan: technically the most awesome guitarist that ever lived Robin Trower: melt into your mouth music with class. John Mayall: British blues at their best Peter Green's original Fleetwood Mac Most music styles, I like - except pun
I use all the time: Windowblinds Iconpackager Logonstudio Bootskin Cursor XP Plus Icon X Sysmetrix Thememanager to build suites from existing skins for personal use, ie: using logons, boots, icons, cursors and ported MS Styles, walls, sounds etc. sometimes: Desktop X Right click Objectbar. My desktop is changed sometimes 2 or 3 times a daydepending on my mood and level of boredom with what's
Thanks, Corky, it seems you hit the nail on the head. A rather knowledgeable friend just informed me that these browser hijackers can innoccously sit in your computer until the user inadvertantly does something to activate the code which executes a trojan/virus, etc. It would be wise for anyone experiencing unusual browser activity to investigate their browser add-ons bt the aforementioned method to disable and remove unwanted paraphenalia.
That's alright, Doomgaze, there's other kinds of employment in I.T. Still reckon boomerang technology is the go, with a x10 amplifier to really ram the message home to the sources of these parasites. A fractured monitor and box or two would be a deterrent, don't you think? Explosives would be the go if you could add them to the boomerang Maybe even a small nuke :
You're more than welcome, BoXXi, credit where credit is due. In the days of Olympus, you'd have been a god and the Greek poets would have been green with envy. Perhaps an M.B,E. is in order for artistic/literary contribution. Seriously though, I enjoy your skins immensely and found your story pleasantly pleasing. Aire valley is a lovely part of the wor
Just as well they didn't have corporal punishment in schools when I was a lad - I'd NEVER have made into adulthood otherwise. Tis a sad thing when a school environment has bars and security guards to keep the peace, etc. When I was going to school, guns and true violence were never heard of, just rotten egg gas bombs and the occasional "golden flush" (toilet dunking) for a few non-conformists. Sometimes we might even sneak in a smoke behind the bike
G'Day Apocolypse, I downloaded the WOW suite via my theme manager and all seems to be fine with WMP, System metrix and the bootskin. I don't have Rainlendar or Winamp to say if those components are ok or not. I purchased the Object Desktop suite and have 2.20.030, now updating to 2.20.031, and it seems to be working as intended. Fingers crossed for after the update
Hi there, I'm no expert, but I understand that you can recolor the "Media Center 2005" theme in Windowblinds by clicking the Recolor tab. Also, you can get a freeware version of SkinStudio from Stardock to try your hand at recoloring, porting and other skinning projects. If you like it, you could then get the Object Desktop suite which contains SkinStudio and other skinning tools - and no, I don't work for Stardock, but did purchase it myself and hav
To all those who are interested in smileys and emoticons, ect - beware of the "so-called" free ones. In many instances the EXE files they're packaged in contain additional stuff you'd rather not have on your computer - adware and browser add ons, etc. So don't agree to install the package if you don't want the malware, it's not easy to eradicate. Most of these files will not be deleted ordinarily. For anyone finding such malware, try the tip I was g
This disabling patch, does it still allow you to annoy others when the fancy arises?
You're right there, Zero, this malware situation harms much more than the end user. I just read an article agreeing with you that many good artists have had their reputations tarnished by "bundling" and that they have stopped sharing their works. That's a crime in itself! Perhaps the analogy here is somewhat exaggerated, but isn't that tantamount to defacing the Mona Lisa? Furthermore, some of this malware disables Desktop Architect, the very tool
"Bring back capital punishment in scools"? Hey Jafo, didn't know they ever had the rope/chair in schools, LoL But your other solution is an interesting concept. I recently had trouble with browser hijackers and a trojan attack myself, and quite frankly, the viruses who put this stuff out there should definitely lose something precious to them. End user awareness is essential, but with so many of these obnoxious parasites being developed so
An update for those who replied to my skinning questions: I just got PSP 5 from a CD that came with a Windows XP magazine and installed it. From initial looks, it seems to have layer support as there is a separate window when first run that has "add -remove layers". If this is the case, I should be able to practice some and acquire some experience with what I have on hand. Cheers guys <img src="http://images.stardock.com/wc/smiles/Wink.gif" bord
