Eh. It's a forum. Off topic is in its nature. I'd be against taking settlers out. City building is half the fun for me. I love scoping out the terrain with that surveyor tool and I razed countless towns and cities because the AI put them in a stupid place that made it impossible to build a city on a really good location. It would also make nature magic a much less interesting color since half the fun of that particular spell list was all of its city enhancements and terrain modification

Sigh.. DOSbox is available for Macs, but only Panther. My work Powerbook is still on Jaguar and I can't put Panther on until we do "documented testing" a la Sarbanes Oxley legislation even though Panther is the OS the laptop came with. Oh well... Homeworld 2 is coming out soon for Mac so at least I'll have something fun until I manage to finagle enough cash for a real PC.
The combat aspect of the original, though still reasonably fun, could definitely stand some improvement. But aside from improving the graphics, what would you all like to see? Here's some of my thoughts. Please comment and pick apart at your leisure. Larger: The battles seemed kind of rinkydink and devoid of any serious terrain considerations even back in the day. I don't think action points are necessary and still like the idea of keeping the move/attack concept the same, but anything
I think keeping all the old and adding a bunch of new stuff rather than implenting too many new rules sets etc... would be the way to go. The game remains just as addictive to me today as it was ten years ago. It's just such a pain to run now and even an optimal machine it crashes frequently. I think the one big question would be how to conduct tactical combat as this is definitely on of the most dated parts of the old one. Only problem is, it's still fun regardless. I lost my interest for Age o
That, sir, is very welcome news. Let the MOM wishlist threads begin! Where do me and my friends sign up to preorder?
Well, I'm not too excited about any of those MoM clones. For every pro bono game that gets completed, hundreds fall by the wayside and no offense to the people working on them, but most of them are graphically lamer than the original. Why clone the game when you've got DOSBox? Also, there have been X-Com clones going on for years now and none of them have been finished. As for a bug free, graphically updated, essentially identical MOM but with some new spells and a couple new races? Hel
I'm curious. How many copies of Gal Civ have been sold? It would help put things perspective as far as seeing just how many people out there are still willing to play turn-based strategy. You've got a lot of MOO fans on your side, no doubt. I would expect a lot of those to also be MOM fans, but it's hard to say.
Might want to try this thread. We've been talking about it for weeks. http://www.galciv.com/forum.asp?BID=GF&id=177564
Yes.. yes... very true. >cough< BUMP
I disagree with your MOO 2 assessment. As far as the AI was concerned, Klackons, Silicoids, and Sakkra were always much more of a threat and once I got over the creative thing, I found that custom races with lithovore and high pop growth were much more effective. It wasn't that hard to fill out most of the empty slots in your tech tree with diplomacy, espionage, and captured ship scrapping. Not to mention going for ultimate ground combat race for that early Antaran capture (a gamble but always f
Alright, tell you guys what. You decide to make this game, I will do PR for you pro bono. I've had a lot of indirect experience with the profession having written for Game Informer for four years and very quickly learned the difference between a good PR Rep and a bad one. And yes, I know that "review" is kind of sloppy and disorganized but I sat down and spewed it out in a couple hours. Didn't even spell check it.
Uh... okay, I'll answer that question in this thread too. Only 4 figures per unit though. Gnoll units look good on paper but that halfling luck bonus and extra health for lizardmen womp 'em pretty good. I'd put good money on Clackon regular units vs. gnoll regulars too.

So where's that FrogBoy at? I'm wondering if we're just blowing steam here or not. StarDock, will you help us find our MOM? Some of us haven't seen her in a decade.
Star Control 3 was kinda weak. The ships weren't as cool, the 3D galaxy kind of confusing, and they actually lynched huge chunks of dialogue straight out of Star Con 2. Never got around to playing the full version of Pax 2 but the combat looked really lame. Real time 2D in spave. :P It did have some promising other features though. Apparently you could do all kinds of cool things with spies and whatnot. [Message Edited]
Best thing everybody can do is help spread the word. I've gone to every gaming site and forum I could think of but I'm sure there's plenty more. If you stumbled across this by pure accident than make sure you let whatever peeps you hang with and talk to know about it.
Huh? Brax had pathfinding? I thought he only had like one weak special ability. Are we talking about the same dwarf I always tossed? What I really hated about that guy was that if I didn't send him off to his death he'd keep showing up over and over again. Updating all the spell effects could be a pretty tall order. I think there are something like 170 plus spells in the original. But man would would that be cool. Especially if all the global enchantments had visible effects. I think th
You don't like Klackon armor or stag beetles? And I love finding troll towns. They make a great disposable skirmish line since they just come back to life if you win the battle. Lousy startup race, but that was the point I was trying to make in the first place. It's okay that some races are lousy starters. That doesn't mean people won't be throwing everything they have at a fully developed Dark Elf city just so they can get some Warlocks. Keeps things interesting. As it is now, I suspec
What the heck? I think that addy for that link is too long. Try this indirect link to a google search showing the article in question. Fourth one down. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=MOM+cracks+call+spells&btnG=Search [Message Edited]
And here it is. Third message down. Nice work Dave. I'll post a new topic too. http://apolyton.net/search.php?q=Master%20of%20Magic%20MOM%20spell%20list&domains=apolyton.net&sitesearch=apolyton.net&cof=GIMP:000080;T:000000;LW:1;ALC:004080;L:http://apolyton.net/images/site/blank.gif;LC:004080;LH:1;BGC:ffffff;AH:left;VLC:004080;GL:0;S:http://apolyton.net;GALT:800000;AWFID:1479733c6fac263c;
http://db.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/file/master_of_magic.txt Reads more like the minutes from an old newsgroup and I disagree with a ton of stuff people had to say in it, but there is a lot of info about Master of Magic in there for any of you folks who want to know more. I've been trying to find a complete spell list, but there aren't as many fan sites as there used to be.
Well, the potential balancing I'm worried about is on the level of minimizing those strengths and weaknesses to the point where the different races cease to be interesting. For me, it shouldn't be about giving every race an equal likelihood to kick butt and dominate the world quickly so much as conforming to different styles of play. As is, in a multiplayer game, certain races would clearly dominate player choices (my bet's on the halflings or lizard men. I'm saying that's okay, because it's sti
:P Communist.
Wish there was some way to run it on a Mac.
I could see it reasonable to maybe take the slingers down a notch, but no more than that. That or introduce a range statistic for all ranged attackers and give slingers a much lower range than say, Elvish longbowmen. They'd still be super cool but would have to close on enemies a bit in order to attack.
