I agree with Dr. Guy. They haven't "lost" anything; if they walk out with $5,000, it's 5,000 more than they came in with. Frankly, though, I would almost definitely take the first offer over $50k. While $50k wouldn't set us for life, it would get us debt free and we could start banking our money instead of using it to pay out interest on bills.
