I don't really know if this would work for your boys, but what I did was to get mine sort of conditioned to a ritual (It could be anything..night prayers..bedtime stories..dreamtime whatever you can invent) before bedtime. The ritual has to be something they have to actively participate in and you could even make it fun. sorry for the delayed reply, kingb. Now that you mentioned it, she had this compilation of letters she wrote and the replies she received from her late husband during the period they were separated due to her training. She went to them often and finally bookbound them and made them part of her library. If there were things couples could learn to maintain their relationships, I guess they'd find it there.
-no diary, but definitely a lot of publications,standing as testimony to her life. maybe that's enough.
