From an academic perspective, it is of relatively little interest compared to the impact AI has on the gaming experince, there game developers not research graduates. Gal Civ II's AI wont be the centre of discussion anywhere else than in the games industry as that is where its only real practical application lies. Lets look at this from another angle, your playing a racing game, you and the computer have exactly the same car, same modifications even the same paint job, yet his car can

I was for one was quite suprised to see post's like this one and others offering relatively rare insights into how a software devloper has progressed over the years. And its refreshing. I think the real challenge for stardock will be (one that has probably all ready being addressed, if it hasnt been so all ready) "How do we not alienate existing 'hardcore gamers' or power users while at the same time appealing to wider interest, to further increase the market for our games", a more
In responce to moo: Hold on a second, the only difference you state between LAN and online multiplayer is knowing the individuals your playing against. Your talking about finding players to play against, thats not really an issue (well it is borderline, because these types of games are so time consuming, so LAN games would be preferable in some cases) Its a bit more complicated than that, in any case the issue is whether adding a multiplayer would have detracted from the single playe
Its ever so easy to say in retrospect "Oh all they have to do is such and such" when your not the one going to actually doing it. There are so many other multiplayer games out there, the market is saturated with them, singleplayer games have taken a huge hit with the rise of broadband. Shifting deman and developer focus into this expanding market. Hate to say this but im sure that those that actually want multiplayer or something to play over LAN can find one of the 100's of games th
FACT: The game wouldn't have been "perfect" if Stardock would have spent a third of their resources on multiplayer. Hit the nail on the head. Just to clarify there are ways of measuring how many actually play LAN games. Polls, market research, etc (which like everything has a margin of error) If there was a huge major
Its not like it hasnt been tested it at all, it just hasnt been tested to the extent a normal patch public release would have undergone. So expect to find bugs, but i wouldnt expect them to be show stopping or detrimental to the gaming experience for the vast majority of players.
The AI isnt getting more difficult accross the board.
The above post seems to have nailed the issue in part, that does seem to be one of the factors influencing who surrenders to who. Its pretty obvious, but easily overlooked. Besides unless im in an incredibly bad predicament i dont want the AI surrending to me, theres no point in playing if the games handed to you on a silver platter. If youve worked for that surrender thats a different matter.
CIV 4 AI is quite solid, especially when its on the attack, as is Rome Total War:Barbarian invasion which has a merciless AI (but it piles on the numbers so it doesnt quite count as much as a superior strategic AI, which it does an adequate job of) I do think 83% is a bit in the shallow end of the pool as review scores go, but generaly PC Gamer UK have reviews in or around the target area 95% of the time. No way did Empire Earth 2 deserve anything like that score, terrible
I think the key is to increase the AI's probability of purchasing ships by the full amount in one lump sum rather than pay a lump sum and then a number of bc weekly to pay the full amount required. It could last 100's of weeks for a single ship to be repayed in such a way depending on the expense of the ship and the how much of the ship was payed for in the initial lump sum. If the AI is purchasing more than 1 ship this way (which looks to be very lik
Publishers always seem to stick bigger labels and plaster there names across a title when they didnt even develop it. Usually ending up in every tom dick and harry saying "the latest EA game, Empires At War sucks" even though its not developed by them. Yet Electronic Arts is an odd case as it does develop its own games as well.
Its looking increasinlgy likely that hat oyur describting is a bug, a cant think of any other explanation for it if all the information is correct, anyway trade for the ship and acquire if for yourself to be 100% certain. Just to rule out any possible bugs in the spying system.
No idea, but i too came across a less than expected bonus from the galactic wonder which increases your research by 50% on planet, i had (around)400 beakers beforehead and was thus expecting a 200 increase, i got an increase of around 50.
If you want to solve this once and for all, find the name of the ship, ie defender 2431 and then trade for it.
And here I thought this game had a campaign mode. Silly me. Playing the campaign is quite different to the sandbox skirmish mode available, youve missed the point. And yet even the campaign does not forfill this criteria.
Im kicking the AI's arses on (whats two difficulty settings above tough?) quite happily and im ready o put it up another notch. Once you know exaclty how everything works, its quite easy to make the best descisions 100% of the time.
The only thing that makes me yorn (and rather dreary eyed) is the music. When people talk about 'soul' what they really mean is that they want a bit more backstory a bit more in depth text to put thing in context. And they dont just want this stuff out of game they want it ingame. I for one only recenlty noticed that the Yor homeworld is called Iconia (having read about how the iconians created the Yor Collective and then lost their planet to them thousands of years ago). Seeing that
Check your mail thoroughly becuase the email containing the activation code is automated and sent upon recieving your payment, I acquired mine seconds after i payed via paypal. Check all stages of the transaction, double check your mail, tinker with your account info, email tech support again. A moderator or someone with the ability to make things happen will most likely see this post anyway and resolve the situation for you. Oh and make sure youve used the same email address for ALL your dealin
Given enough time on any size map, your cultural borders wil always clash with other empires, every square inch of the map will be claimed. So your always going to have (usually) more than one neighbour. The single biggest bit of help i can give to anyone wishing to play on the hardest difficulty level and still win is to make sure youve got the most powerful economy ingame. That usually means at the start choosing the 30% economics bonus.
It all depends on how many troops theyve got in those transport(s) approaching and if there are any more a few turns out. If i think my population has a moderate chance of repelling the invaders without any help from myself and there ar no more transports on the way ill rush buid a planetary defence, with any luck that 25% bonus has saved the planet, and it has not fallen into enemy hands who if it didnt work now have a 25% defensive bonus in their favour. However i dont loose planet
By the way.. I disagree about not every planet not needing a star port. If the planet is higher than a 4 then it gets a starport and a factory. You never know when you could use an extra rushed ship in case the unexpected happens, plus the 1 BC for maitenence is not that much of a killer Its not just the 1bc weekly maintenance cost of the
Once you start getting populations on a single planet of 30+mil (happened to me a few times) managing the little buggers becomes a nightmare. As a stopgap solution i usually load a few million of them into transports and cart them off to wage war.
You can play with Dread lords enabled in skirmish, not just in the campaign. Have a detailed look through all the options in the screen that, among other things you choose your galaxy size. You need the latest patch.
I cant believe the nerve of Citizen Campaigner on post #60. Acting as damage control for Starforce, the damage has all ready been done. Starforce's reputation has taken another hit. [Quote] "About the StarForce admin posting a link to a torrentsite that's something that most people can find anyway....if he had said: "well, GalCiv II doesn't have our protection and is getting pirated" then people would probably tell him to show some hard evidence. Now he did, and he gets blamed f
The game i was ashamed of purchasing that utilised Starforce was X3, incidentally all retail versions of X2/X3 sold on every contienent use Starforce. You will want to update your list.
