There's a big difference between taking food and taking jewelry, though. If all my groceries were under 10 feet of water and there was a loaf of bread at a store that survived, you better believe I'd nick it in a second. Stealing food is survival. I'll agree with you that looting jewelry and other non-necessities is disgusting. But you mentioned food, and I can't place sustenance in the same category with consumer garbage.
