@ GW I like the idea of everyone having an exactly set finite amount of a primary resource. Mana fills the role of a renewable source of energy. However, if you really think having ways to get essence during the game is a fun option, it seems like that could be easy to add as an option at setup. (Allow essence as quest reward/some other way). It is weird that I see some people wanting essence recouped after someone takes over your land though - what
Essence is a personal "stat" for the channeler (you the player) and not a resource stream like mana in MoM or Iron in Civ. Whether you spend essence on restoring lands, annointing champions, or enhancing spells, you cannot count on ever replacing that essence. But, you can hope that you'll be lucky enough to do so..) In Civ / MoM / MoO and other games of this nature your first few turns have a HUGE impact on the game due to the escalating nature of production and growth. It sounds like Elemental will have an even greater scale of escalation, balancing you starting options will be fun. Sammual
Seeing all the comparisons to MOM, I wanted to get my biggest pet peeve out... Large killer units. They might be ok against human opponents, but in MOM, the whole game boiled down to having the killer stack and the AI couldn't keep up. Regardless of how far I fell behind against the AI, it didn't matter as long as I built the largest army. I'm not saying it isn't a valid path for a game, but to me it isn't epic. I prefer there being so
I would not, however, feel it is unreasable to have "within influence" and "out of influence" changes. Say, you can cast spells globally, but outside influence (or into different dimensions) you have a higher casting cost, or different casting rules apply. In MoM, it was a global casting with a minor "distance from tower" effect that gave no way to sense the scale. I'd deem it reasonable to keep the idea of a sphere of influence, as given by AoW, but change it to be less limiting.

Your 'sphere of influence' idea is interesting but sounds like it would add a lot of complexity for too little gain. As far as mana per turn goes I don't see why it wouldn't be in the game. I see spells with only mana costs to be 'burst' type spells of no great power (Single combat attacks or weak area effect spells). Spells adding a small essence cost would be greatly enchanced 'burst' spells or something with a permenent effect. Spells adding a large essence cost w

The fun of this portion of the game would be in watching your empire grow organically. Example: There are no ratios to set. If I bu

Better then Beta? No. In a Beta you get to experence the issue and then with enough info make an informed choice. In this case we heard a short summary of what was being discussed and got to weigh in on it. Other then that I agree. I think it is great that SD let us in on a discussion they were having and let us attempt to influence the end result. Sammual

My plan for the weekend is to finish Map Generation. The second to last step will be starting locations. I have a DB setup that has all the tile types and how much they are worth to each race. I will calculate the city value for every spot on the map and place each players starting city in one of the top X spots (Where X is the number of players). Doing it this way your starting city will be in a great spot. The last step will be to add the special loc

On almost any other game forum, I'd have expected to see a huge outcry, wailing and gnashing of teeth over this, but you guys have taken it pretty coolly and calmly assessed the things you like and dislike about it. Kudos.
You are giving us too much credit. The game is not even in Alpha yet. At this point everything is on the drawing board.
