it's a good try, but the judge does say the prisoner will hang "at sunrise on one of the seven days next week". i'll offer two possible solutions. the first solution depends on the validity of knowledge. suppose you say to a friend, "i have a hunch that the time is 2:37pm" and then you look at the clock to find you were absolutely correct. did you "know" the time? or suppose i ask you "what is the square root of three rounded to the neare

there's a chick craze going about these days. i had an argument a while back with someone at work that there were certain animals/pets that had to be named according to their species. chickens are one. feel free to call one of them "chicken 2" and another "chicken 10". for the record llamas are another. no "dali" or mama" or anything of the sort ought to be permitted. "llama" will cover everything you need to know. so what's with
very well done. i was stumped.
im not sure this is on-subject, but how does one change his/her ranking from, what, citizen (1) to prouser (2) and so on or whatever and yadda yadda? tbt
Look at it this way: suppose, instead of allowing seven days during which the prisoner might hang, the judge allows for only saturday or sunday. let us say it is friday night, and according to the judge, the prisoner will either hang on saturday or sunday--and the prisoner is still not to know which day. does this change the problem, or is it still the same question?
i was diverted to joe.joeuser.com while im not mortally concerned about the troll/insightful rater, i would prefer to see more articles displayed per category. also, forum activity seems like a limited option compared to recent articles and recent posts. still, it looks good. and thanks for the continued effort at making this a great free site. by the way, do you offer any premium services for this blog site? tbt</f
what seems funny to me is the fact that at first, something may seem like an on-topic response can end up as a crazy tangent. let me see: freedom of expression to censoring to political correctness to systems of language. quite a feat for 50 some-odd comments! tbt
im surprised that no-one has commented here. i give you five stars on your bluntness, and may the world's deities have mercy on everyone else's soul. tbt
matthews is a bit of an embarrassment. it makes no sense to accuse someone of staging a photo-op. you gain nothing from such an accusation. but myrrander is right: it also makes no sense to declare that one party supports such bungholes while another maintains its purity. as someone else likewise pointed out, matthews does NOT speak for me. You probably don't want to declare who else has no right to speak for you. that gets a little irrit
that is an interesting paradox, and dissects the notion of time, i think. i never really understood that one. maybe it has to do with splitting infinity? i seem to remember a debate about it in some philosphy course, and im fairly sure i came out on the bunghole side of that one. this paradox is a knowledge paradox. im not sure that qualifies as a hint, but so it goes. tbt
i forgot to make my case with the word "doctor". The link above suggested that the British use this term: "Lady doctor". Can anyone from England verify this? tbt
easter diamondback, first of all, i thank you very much for your post. this is the kind of discussion that makes me very happy. obviously you have studied this issue, and that seems to promise some liveliness when i offer the following proposition (just a friendly debate, okay?): nevertheless, to imagine that
you both have picked up crucial elements to the paradox. the judge, in order to fulfill his oath, must be SURE. he can't guess or hope that the lawyer would explain the paradox to the prisoner. would the judge know about the conversation between the murderer and the lawyer? and even if the judge did know, wouldn't he still be unable to execute him on saturday, and therefore friday, and therefore thursday. . .?
Note: I have heard this riddle presented in many forms. Most recently, I read this version in LABYRINTHS OF REASON by William Poundstone. The jury found the prisoner guilty of the worst sort of murder. Well within his rights to sentence the prisoner to death, the judge could not indulge himself and have the manner of the murderer's death exceed a s
boones', oh yeah. nothing like drinking grape flavored wine. the thing is, philomedy, every drink has its snobby variety , and its lowbrow cousin. wine, of course, has created categories for snobs of every financial strata. us lowbrow boones' drinkers may think it's funny, but even among plunk varieties, pinots give the cold shoulder to merlots, cabernets sniff at pinots. be
keeping an open mind is key. once youre certain your mind is open, then it's okay to open the mouth. i was in barcelona in '98. beautiful city, by the way. i was writing, and traveling by myself for the most part--except when i met fellow travelers at hostels heading my way. i wanted to visit lucerne, switzerland and i was traveling at the time with a young german woman and a man from the netherlands (his name was jasper, by the way. . .it may hav
well said. i think that your differentiation is key. TBT
you make a good point; reading what i wrote there makes me feel silly. there's your proof that the freedom of speech doesnt ensure wisdom. people should be held accountable for what they say--but censoring them is not only wrong but dangerous. if i spend public air time defaming someone without proof or cause, then i must be accountable, i dont think that this is an infringement of the first amendment. by speaking on a public forum, i must
thank you very much for all of this, kingbee. i have printed out your entire response, and am proceeding to bookmark everything you pointed toward. i also really like the idea of tinkering with a computer--i may actually have something that my girlfriend wont destroy me for destroying. im sure i will be trying to track you down for some more tips as i get a clue or two. you have been very helpful, kb. thanks again. tbt
so you suggest dissecting an old computer, then identifying and tinkering with the components? it actually sounds kind of fun. but what about understanding, say, windows organization? is there a site or manual that will start me on the path to understanding file extensions? and i have played around with html lesson sites for the last month or so. it seems to help, but what to do about java and xml stuff? probably my biggest problem is tha
I am not rewriting metaphysical treatises on existentialism or empathizing with Joycean characters neglected by Dublin, Ireland. But time parted for me and I held the universe in my palm for an endless segment of reality. This took place as the New Year began. Slumped back into this hairy, soggy desk chair as usual, typing into an article my half-formed t
competition is something i can definitely understand. all right, maybe i understand the whole thing a little better. let me ask this: do you have a take on carrying loaded firearms in public?
everyone has a tendency to be greedy, including (though i wouldnt say especially) democrats. im not sure why im picking this post to pose this question, except that among the many conservative writers on this site, i tend to enjoy and find illumination discussing things with you. being a liberal these days requires a lot of soul searching and honesty, in order to figure out how i really feel about what is happening the world of politics. i a
im not really sure how i feel about gun ownership, to be honest, though i dont have a strong need to univerally ban them for other people. im just curious: what do you use all of your guns for? im fairly certain some of these are for hunting, and some may be for personal protection. but my best guess is that a lot of these are just for personal collections. do you use them all for something? tbt
