/me is thinking of sending this skin to support @ stardock.com to see if they can solve this...

This is beyond a joke now I carried on re-creating the skin from copying the settings etc into an entirely new skin. I kept checking the menus each time I adjusted anything which I thought might remotely have an impact on the menus and it stayed working. I then "finished" transfering the little things like quick launch background images, a couple of colour settings on various bits, and othe
Essencay - interesting...I tend to start with the taskbar and Start Menu to get a feel for how I want the whole skin to look. Then the Logoff/Shutdown dialogues as an easy place to start trying out ideas for buttons and the look of the solid areas...then menus...and only THEN start on the main Window components as they seem to just follow after that Interesting to get an insight into different ap
Chris Lee - can I suggest that it's probably not even as simple a things as 2000/XP as the difference...it's probably down to video drivers, and WB being able to make use of Hyperpaint would be my guess. I don't know how this technology works, but I would assume that it is using texture space on the video card ram to re-paint the windows...it could be then that this only works when the graphics are at 24 (or 32) bit...so "optimised" graphics resort to non-hyperpaint re-draws? Just a th
I think this is a necessary "evil" to allow new visitors to the site/new users of products quick and easy access to some tried and tested good quality options. It never will represent all that's good and great, but I don't think that's what's intended - as Lecrayon points out, tastes vary, and eventually people will look further and make their own judgements on the rest. My only gripe is that my skin didn't make the grade <img src="http://images.stardock.com/images/smiles/lol.g
I'm a manager/IT tech support person...I've done web design/coding in the past, I've run IT breifing seminars (on buying and selling on the Internet in particular), I used to run lots of IT training courses (mostly on Office apps)....I've done a little bit of most things relating to IT really, but currently more a manager than anything.
What the,.....I've now transfered all the easily transfered bits and the menus still work...I'd carry on transfering bits by hand except that the transfer process has broken so many other bits... I can't find any differences in the code in any areas relating to the menus though, so I'm DEFINATELY stumped now... <img src="http://images.stardock.com/images/smiles/notsure.gif" border=0 ALIGN="absmiddle"
Grrr...now I'm more confused as it all works in a new skin! I just created a new "empty" skin and used the File/Import Skin Components in SS (I had to copy the background graphic by hand for some reason)...and it all works then! The same settings, the same graphics. That means there must be something in an entirely unrelated section of the skin causing a side effect....what a PAIN...
Oh...and thanks for looking! I should ahve said that first!
What I might try is starting a new skin and putting just the menu graphics in and seeing if that works...but I'm rather demoralised with fighting it at the moment....
Koasati - I'm using SS v 4.1.0 Build 872. I've also checked the code view to see if I can see anything odd, but with no avail. I've had problems with separators with every skin I've worked on so far (4)...eventually I've got the others working, but this one is most anoying as I HAD it working perfectly first time as I'd learned from the previous tried. I'm glad it's not just me in a way, but at the same time it means I can't fix it *sigh*
as an example of scalable web design, here's one I've taken inspiration from in the past: http://www.ulst.ac.uk It's aim is very different to your's, but look at the title banner for the technique I'm refering to. (BTW, ignore the first page as someone seems to have broken the scalability on the main bit of that one page!)
RE: site - may I suggest that you don't "...make the site in 1024 ..." but that you make it to scale to suit any window size? Break the graphic up into bits (just like a window frame in WB), and use a table with fixed size cells for the graphics, and scalable cells with solid colour (or tiled backgrounds) for the "stretchable" bits. This will also have the advantage that you won't need to crank up the compression as much to make the page load quickly, hence avoiding the jpg artifacts t
or...you could invoke 2 programs from one command line using the form: cmd /c "start notepad & start notepad" In DesktopX, create a URL object pointing to : C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe (or wherever on your system cmd.exe can be found - assuming windows NT/2k/XP) Then set the arguments to: /c "start notepad & start notepad" and Show to Iconic. This works by invoking an instance of the command processor, telling it to execute
SD - for the most part I agree...there are some - the only thing I'd add is that there are some bits of skins which tend to be so small and simple that there's almost no risk of loss of quality, and worth while aiming to create from the outset as 8bit - such as Menu Item Extras...and most control elements actually. Window frames etc set to tile I'm in favour of as it will tend to look better, though it can take some creative thinking if you want something more complicated than a plain
I'm usually downloading a few walls quite regularly, but few of those added in the last few weeks have caught my attention - I just went through the first 4 pages again to see if I'd missed any while I've been busy working on skins...besides those from vlad (softart) who's stuff I always like, nothing really fired my interest.
Koasati - hopefully, you have mail...I've tried everything and I'm still stumped.
Goot pointer to something to try Shameless D...The change I made to the extras might have made it over lap the menu items in a different way. Yes, it is usuing translucency, though to be honest, I probably ought to switch to an 8 bit BMP and magic pink (except for the anti-alias with the x as it needs to work on different backgrounds...) I'll try this route tonight though. Ta Koasati - it might need someone to look at the file for me to see if I've done something stupid
ditto - ya got image links pointing to your hard disk...But, even so it's clear that the graphics won't scale to any window size....they don't even fit on 1024x768 width widows by a long way.
Perfectly true, and I have to put my hands up and plead guilty - but with mitigating circumstances to be taken into account. I started off trying to optimise the first skin I made as I went along, but I kept finding bits where things would break when I switched from TGA to BMP, and from 24bit to 8bit etc, and in the end I was fighting enough obstacles to make the skin work at all, let alone running the risk that a well intentioned optimisation would break something which I might not not
Just FYI, on the skin I'm working on, the Program List image is 186px wide, More Programs bkgrnd is 186px wide, the more programs arrow is 186px wide times 3 images (558px total), and to get it all to line up, the offset needed on the content margin is -95px. All other margins etc are 0 and the heights of the graphics are all consistent to avoid any stretching being needed. So...er...that makes no sense <img src="http://images.stardock.com/images/smiles/lol.gif" border=0 ALIGN="absmidd
I would offer, but all my e-mail accounts are near the limit for space at the moment untilI can archive some stuff...if you still need a critical opinion in a couple of days, I'll give it a go too for ya.
I can see it...but only because someone put the title back My answer to the question woul be AnimationShop from JASC, but only because I can get it cheaply through work...
I seem to hit this issue each time I make a skin, but this time I'm stumped because it was working very nicely.... The separator item on my pull down menus is invisible. Every other graphic in Menus/Pull down item image work fine, except the separator. I have a different Pull Down Item (Top Item) graphic, but it was working with that to start with. The only thing I knowingly changed that seemed related (and just before I noticed the separator had gone walkabout) is ad
Essencay - no, I listed 2 options (a/b) that Stardock take to solve the issue. The 2nd one of which would allow the skinner to design very diffrent graphics for the rolled up window, and I think that might be a nice feature
