I think your use of the circus as a metaphor for all the shiny, uninformed dreams of youth is well-placed. The closing sentiment Is this what they had pictured when they ran Away to join the real live circus? is as eloquent a realization of the chasm between the dreams of youth and the realities of life as I have ever read. You is one fine writer.

Esquire forgot one item: #60. Never let any magazine attempt to define adult masculinity for you. Sounds like this magazine wants all men to be old stuffy, inflexible prigs. BTW, my variation on #5: I named mine Napoleon because he is short, insane and wants to rule the world.

it symbolizes youth, sexiness, fertility, all that good stuff. and long hair on a woman is another reminder of her difference. (I know men can have long hair and earrings, and I'm showing my socialization and biases, etc. , but since you asked...) Very cool. My 9yo has a Jones for "West Side Story" and broke into "The First Cut is the Deepest" last week when I was playing guitar. She's my future Laura Nyro.

I do not like composing at the computer. It looks too neat, too perfect the first time out. If I write by hand then I know it won't be perfect the first time - I know I'll have to edit it and rewrite it at least once, which improves my writing. However, the idea of trying to decipher my own handwriting gives me a headache, so that's a strike against handwriting. <img src="http://images.stardock.com/JU/smiles/Wink.gif" border=0 ALIGN="absmid

I used to wonder what was the beautiful exotic scent my wife wore - I've since learned that it's Secret deodorant. She still smells great to me.

Beautifully put. This has the wisdom, the weight, of having lived and been disappointed by the lie. As I firmly plant my tuchcus in middle age, reliability and warmth sound very very appealing. Thanks
