When I have updated my older custom ship design, for example with newer lasers, I can't build ships acoording to the upgraded design, I just get the old one instead. Hope this helps..

Makes a lot of sense. A bigger map means you'll gain more out of the same speed bonus, so the bonus itself should be more valuable. And I'm no expert but it doesn't sound very hard to me to implement into the game. Just make the size of the bonus depend on the galaxy size. But again I'm no expert.

I find that the 'minor' races add a little more depth to the game. Perhaps you could create them yourself through modding. However than you're still stuck with the diplomacy issue.
I think that's a good idea. It should add even more realism to the game. However if you choose to adopt this into the game you have to balance it considerably in order to keep the gameplay as much enjoyable as possible. At least you must have the capability of identifying such an uncolonizable planet (from a long range).
