I agree (with Ben). The circles are shown now (before you build), but I'm never sure whether a circle will affect a planet or not. Is it OK if just one pixel of the tile is in the circle? Does the center have to be in the circle? The whole tile? How can you even tell if a tile has a corner-pixel or two in the circle? Actually, it would be better just to highlight the affected tiles, rather than highlighting a circle, so there is no uncertainty.

Will the demo be updated to 1.1 when 1.1 is finalized, and other versions subsequently? This may sound like a dumb question (since I own the game) but it's actually pretty important, so I'd appreciate a response, if you've made a decision.
There are four big differences between a GC2 barebones "orbital ship" and the defenses in SEIV (mines, satellites, fighters, weapon platforms) or MOOII (planetary shields, missile silos, fighters, orbital starbases). Specifically: 1a) In GC2, you get one ship . 1b) In the other games, you get as many ships as you can build, plus all the static defenses, at once . 2a) In GC2, you pay upkeep on defens
Mind if I mention Scrapped Princess? It's an SF book, but in Japanese, so possibly nobody in this thread will ever read it. Fortunately there is an anime adaptation, with English subs, that is quite excellent. Oddly enough, I can't think of any American SF book -> video transitions that went well... for example, Total Recall, Minority Report, and Blade Runner were all based on Philip K Dick books (or short stories), but none of them were nearly as
I've also seen it. Before 1.1B, there were various techs. After the patch, with tech trading on or off, everyone chooses a single offense and a single defense. Last game (trading on) it was lasers/armor. Before that, TT off, it was mass drivers/?. I don't know what the defense was since they never used it. This was on Painful and Tough.
Mmmmmmmm...... I forget. Something some English teacher rammed into my brain sometime.
I see, I guess it's being listed as "Native Ability". That's a bit misleading.
What is blind exploration suppose to do? I keep it turned on, but I can still see stars on the minimap... BTW, beef up your military early with cheap ships. The AIs will all declare war on you if you sit around being peaceful with no navy. Having a navy, even a small one, will make them stop hating you so much. A tiny hull with a single weapon orbiting each planet will make everyone happy. "Good walls make good neighbors."
I recommend Hyperion. Just the first two, unfortunately. Vernor Vinge's "A Fire Upon the Deep", and David Brin's "Uplift" trilogy (the first one) are also very good.
I've had so many ideas for modding GC2, largely with regards to balance and combat mechanics, but I cannot start them yet. Because starbase HP cannot be changed, and the major changes I plan for combat mechanics / technology would break the game if it stayed constant. What is the problem? Here's an example. GC2 has various problems stemming from the use of small integers. For one thing, Laser, Laser II, Laser III, and Laser IV
There are some good change suggestions in here, but I'd still love to get the Space Empires IV / Master of Magic feel of stepping out into the unknown when exploring... rather than just heading for the nearst stars. Hyperspace isn't necessarily something that maps to realspace 1-to-1, so there's no reason why star locations should be known through astronomy. If anyone figures out how to hide stars on the minimap until they have been uncove
I don't recommend that you save the game for the metaverse. You lose a full turn. In singleplayer it's no big deal (though very annoying), but unless you have to turn off your computer (or use it for real work), don't save and exit in a game when you intend to post the score. If you absolutely have to, do it when you're at peace with everyone and not racing to build a Galactic Achievement before some other empire, or you'll regret it.</fon
I agree that currently space seems pretty empty. I love stuff in space... even giant amoebas and crystals. Black Holes, nebulas with hidden pirate bases, and contagious deep-space fungus would all be good fun.
This is not the droid you're looking for. Try Space Empires IV. http://www.malfador.com/se4dwngd.html
Yup. I now put exactly 1 ship on auto-explore, and the rest I move manually (super pain). Otherwise they follow each other like ants. It's cute, but not very effective. Definite one to fix, especially as it wouldn't surprise me if the AI uses this behaviour. It seems to, sometimes. I often see AI scouts operate in pairs. However
Actually the maximum number is purely the number of modules you can possibly put on it, based on what technologies you have researched. That's incredibly unclear. At first I thought I had to prioritize modules to prevent an overflow. Then I realized the number really doesn't matter. 61? What's 61? Not the number of modules I've researched
I just started out, and for some reason constructor ships keep turning starbases into mining starbases, regardless of what the original resource is. I think they're suppose to. Pretend there is a deposit of pure morale in deep space, and you are mining it... like that. I agree that upgrading starbases is just a complete pain. I s
The starship bonus is a bonus to weapon values for ships produced on that planet. It will take a long time for 3% bonus to be noticed, but a 30-70% starship bonus is very noticeable reasonably early-on. Ok, thanks for the tip!
I had a similar experience. I finished a game with the lowest score in most categories, when I was the best. For example, I killed the most in ground combat (19B versus enemies ranging from 7B to 17B), but got the lowest score. I killed 438 ships and lost 30, compared to enemies losing 100-300 and (universally) killing fewer, since they were all at war with me, but my military score was way lower than anyone else's. My tech score was lower, but the
i havent played enough to get a final conclusion on the defense issue, but i completely agree with amanasleep on this one: I sometimes find amanasleep "trolling" and harsh, but often I agree too. Amazingly, incomprehensibly, MOO1 really is still the gold standard for 4x tech trees. And I don't
I believe they are supposed to give +HP to ship hulls. Unfortunately... in the 1.1B patch, at least, I got a +40% to "Ships" planet. Wow! I'll never, ever choose "Good"! I made it a pure industrial world, and then... pumped out ships exactly like ships from all my other planets, with the same 10 HP for "Small" vessels. So, yeah - I think it is broken right now. I also wonder about +Weapon and +Defense bonuses. If a 1/1 ship
Miniaturization tech does let you fit more onto the ships. Not so hard. There's better things to complain about than the miniaturization mechanics. Perhaps you could read the thread before posting? As Narog said: <TABLE cellpadding=8 width="95%" align=center bgColor=#FFF394 class
I could name a bunch of titles from russian devs that are far superior (than) their western (counterparts). Can you? I sure can't. Please, go ahead. I do know of a case where the US intelligence secretly planted bugs in software that the Soviets were attempting to steal. The USSR used this software to control their own gas pipeline, which e
I also noticed that despite the "No more sweetheart deals" AI change, the Drengin kept offering me "Advanced Propulsion" for "Ion Drives" (like I would ever accept a prereq that I no longer needed!). I refused, of course. Then I tested them, and tried to offer them Ion Drives for Advanced Propulsion. ...as expected, they asked me if I had been drinking, and even +500 BC wouldn't change their minds. So, sweetheart deals
Splitting population gives you way more tax revenue, because tax grows with the square root of the population. So splitting your population across 4 planets (evenly) gives you 4X the upkeep costs, but also 2X the tax revenue. Since tax revenue is generally greater than upkeep (at least, with +econ and +growth picks), splitting your population typically gives you more money... or without +econ picks, at least it doesn't hurt you very much.
