ddyson, You definitely didn't need to buy IBM's hardware. I built a system with a Cyrix 488-33 motherboard, 4 MB of RAM, and the rest of the parts from my 286. It was amazing, and even better when I upgraded to 8 MB of RAM (at least $50 a MB at the time). It was a revelation to be able to use my PC as something other than a paperweight while formatting a floppy or downloading a file. People waited years to be able to do that in WinXX (I occassionally need to use a laptop from work with Win98
