We got the memory foot print down to around 300MB which is less than most PC games these days and most of that is swapped out to disk. COOL! 300MB is much better than 600MB! I thought only Diplomat and above has access to the gamma releases
I agree with Noghanimus. If you have a fast Internet connection (broadband is more common in Europe than the US), order it directly from Stardock online using your credit card. You will be charged in US$ which your credit card will convert to €.
Beta 5 (GalCiv2 0.80a[b].002) looks good and is proving to be much more stable than Beta 4 (0.79), which of course makes it much more fun to play. I have noticed that if I hibernate my computer (P4 512Mb WinXP SP2), often when I resume, GalCiv2 crashes. My biggest compliant is GalGiv2's large memory footprint of about 600Mb total (counting both physical and virtual). Since my com

Manual says you need one Megaton of food for each miliion. I have a 10.98 billion planet that is producing 20mt and is still increasing. Manual should say 1 mt needed for each BILLION right? I made this same point in the past. Some of the references suggest the population is measured in millions and
Space Empires http://www.malfador.com/ allows for tactical control of ships during combat and ship boarding. You need to first take out the enemy's ships shields and then move into range to beam your marines aboard. You can research boarding marines and defenses against boarding. Without tactical combat I don't think ship boarding adds value. I do think adding tactical combat adds value but that will have to wait until expansion packs or GalCiv3 (I
The AI is already better than what I have seen in other Space 4X games. I find the dev jounal posts regarding AI improvements very encouraging. I hope they also will address the large memory footprint. I'm running on a P4 with 512MB running WinXP SP2 and find GalCiv2 gets up to 600MB (half of which is swapped out of course). So unless you are running on a box with 1GB of memory, swapping is an issue. <img src="smiles/Crying.gif" border=0 ALIGN="a
Having to explore and look for habital planets is all part of the game. It is not very realist to have most of the planets habitable. However, maybe the habitability of the planets should vary from race to race. The perfect planet for humans might not be perfect for an alien race and vise versa.
There are many games like that such as Space Empires, http://www.malfador.com/. I like to support small independent game developers like Stardock and Malfador. I played the demo of Space Empires III and IV. I never bought the game because the graphics and AI were poor. Based on screen shots they have improved the graphics in Space Empires V; I hope they do the same for the AI. I would place a beam weapon that bypassed shields on my ships and would
I have reconfirmed when I restore a saved game, my tourist income is gone until the next turn. Also, I don't know if this is a bug or the result of some bonus. When I build a ship ship with G4P3A2 (G=guns,P=point defense,A=armor), it is shows up as having G5P4A2. Also, sometimes my star bases which should have G7P5 have instead G7P7. This may have been for star bases that successfully fought off attacks and possibly gained some experience
Since your colony can't grow past 3 million/billion (this is not clear in the game because items like how much the farms can feed refer to millions and some others like the news reports refer to billions) without a farm. However, that farm can be built much faster if a factory exists, so I build a factory first and a farm second. My third choice depends on various factors such as the bonues of the titles, the class of the planet, the planet's purpose
When building small ships, they would have 15 hit points instead of 12 because of a bonus I received from exploring an anomaly and building the Xinathium Hull Plating project. On my planet with the Manufacting Captial, I built an Omega Shipyard which should provide a 50% hit point bonus to ships built there. I was expecting small ships with 21-23 hit points depending on whether the 50% applies to the base 12 or 15 and if it rounds up or down. Howeve
> So it's not possible to change an existing design and save it under a different name? Nope! I like to create short, medium, and long range variants of the colony, constructor, and freighter ships with the short range being the cheapest and long range the most expensive. At least everytime I make an advance in engines or life support, I can upgrade these variants but creating the initial designs is a pain!
> GalCiv2 Crashes when Restoring a Game > While playing the game over the span of hours I noticed that saving the game took very long. The memory utilization had grown to 600MB, likely do to memory leakes. When I try restoring the last auto save, after several minutes a dialog box appears with title, "Fatal Error" and message "Invalid call". This game was created under the first Beta 5 and I continued it using GalCiv2 0.80a[b].00
I like creating short, medium, and long range versions (varying in price) of the standard ship designs. However, each time I create a new design I need to start from scratch. It would be nice if I could copy the standard colony ship (with all its' added eye candy) and then just change the engines and life support. This is basically what happens when we upgrade a ship design. So how about adding a COPY button next to the NEW button.
I found the latest NVIDIA display driver to be 8.1.9.5, 2005/11/11, not 2005/03/11 as reported above.
