But to answer your question, DeskScapes rely on the same core technology as DreamScene, which was (according to media) co-developed by Microsoft and Stardock. Dreamscene gives the ability to have animated wallpaper, and DeskScapes use that feature to offer more features. You're using Dreamscene every time you use a DeskScape.
One thing to try: In Windows Update, turn off updates for all products, so it lists: "You receive updates: For Windows Only." I've read somewhere that if you enable updates for everything, Ultimate updates won't show up.
0563814, for your problem, I'd suggest downloading a WMV and an MPG, try setting the desktop to each of these. Chances are, you've got something wrong with one of the two encoding formats. Also, try using the "Ovals" DeskScape, and see if Dynamic Content is working for you. Have you installed any additional codec packs? ffdshow has been known to cause a few issues, and if you search the forums, people have posted changes you need to make to the settings to get it working correctly. 1Spa

RottGutt, can you take a screenshot of the problem? I've tried to repro the issue, but with no luck. I haven't been able to get my hands on a 7000 series card to test, and I haven't heard of anyone reporting an issue with any other series card.
Maybe Stardock could extend the web system to allow one "Dream" to have lo-res and hi-res versions? It'd be nice to be able to find a dream, and select which resolution (if the author was kind enough like you) to offer multiple resolutions.
Pyrusmg, the issue in discussion here is not the known issue of Dreamscene vanishing (not acting installed, not available to install, not available to uninstall), since that issue has a few threads already. This is strictly installing DeskScape on 64-bit. David, the problem you're referring to is affectionately called a TDR (Timeout Device Reset, or Timeout Display Reset). This is a known issue with certain versions of the NVIDIA display driver, you may wish to try a later version.
vStyler, I disagree. When there's everything to INSTALL on Linux, it'll flourish. The majority of people will pick the OS that can do the majority of what they want to do. MS knows everyone hates DRM. But let me ask you? Do you really believe Microsoft runs the world? Microsoft is under pressure to either support ever-stronger DRM, or not play DVDs. Look how much longer it took for Linux to be able to play a simple DVD than Windows.

I'll take a look. A good recommendation (may not help) is to go thru Add/Remove Programs, and uninstall "NVIDIA Drivers" (just the display drivers, if you've got an nForce chipset). Then install, and make sure if you're prompted to replace files, to say yes. Tripdog, do you know a way to cause this to happen? And are you using the setup.exe program found in the driver install package?

I haven't been able to repro this issue. The only thing I don't have is a 7600 board. I tried to get my hands on one, but no luck. I tried the 6800, and the 8800, but even with the codec pack, it ran fine. Do you have a screenshot showing the problem?

Paul, my suggestion was only for Dynamic content. Video content would be driven by Microsoft's DreamScene engine, which is enabled immediately on startup. It's only the DeskScape Dynamic Content which has the 10-second delay. So the suggestion only affects Desktop Earth, that spinning box thingie, and ovals. The requested change should NOT affect any other video backgrounds.

MadDuke, I'll take a look and submit a bug report if there's a driver incompatibility. Especially if it's a regression. It's probably too much to ask, but Neil, is there a tool to extract apart a .DREAM file? This would make this a lot easier to diagnose.

WHQL just means it won't complain about signing. Won't affect if the driver works for you or not. If the driver version number is the same, it's the same driver (unless you either got a corrupt package or hacked version). Trying it now, but I'm not having a problem. I'll try tomorrow with 158.18, a 7700GT, and that codec pack.
Sounds great. Seems like you could even cheat, and tell Windows to set the default background moments before configuring the DeskScape. That way, when the 10 seconds are ticking away, Windows has that in the background.
