Thanks zp00k. I think its good that gamers, and all consumers for that matter question things like this. Shouldn't there be a prompt asking us for our permission before installing something that runs in the background every time you turn on your computer even when your not playing Galciv? Why not a little window that says "A new application will be added to your background processes is that ok?" giving the customer a choice. I'd like to see that. I salute the fanatic

Evil Furby, I am one of those freaks who like to optimize my gaming machine to the max but I realize most players aren't. For most the few frames per second they lose is not an issue but for a freak like me it is. And yes I usually have my antivirus up and firewall unless I need to take it down for a particular reason. There were similar problems with gamespy back in the day. Illegal? No. Incredibly annoying? Yes. What you want to do is delete the downloaded version of the game you got from stardock clean up whatever is left behind and then install the retail version of the game. Then when a patch comes out, try your best to find and download it from a source other than stardock. As for the program the problem with it is that it runs while you are doing things other than Galciv and it causes a performance hit to your system. It could be spyware, or it could be something stardock thinks they need to provide better service. Who knows? I am not going to assume it's evil, all I know is it is eating up a bit of my precious performance from my gaming machine. If you want to check it out do this. Hit "CTR-SHIFT-ESCAPE" and select your applications tab. If your an obsessive gamer you are already familiar with the programs running here and you know how to manage your processes to optimize for gaming. The little stardock buggers are in all caps and start with the letters "SD".

If you buy the retail version of the game you can bypass the stardock spyware but it sounds like they are trying to monopolize the patching process. So you wont be able to patch the game unless you are willing to take the performance hit from their sneaky little program.

If you try to patch or "update" your game through stardock you will notice that you need to restart your computer. After that you will see a new application running in the background everytime you start your computer. No matter what you are doing wether its playing Galciv or doing your taxes you will always have stardock running it's little program in the background. I've noticed that this additional program causes my computer to slow down a bit. Does anyone know what it does or what it is
