How is it so absurd to be upset by this?
Because it's easily worked around both in game and out (by modifying some text). It's a valid gripe with a solution present that some folks choose to ignore. Perhaps it'll be changed in a future patch.

Good thing they made the game easily moddable, then. Carry a couple ones in a text file and the pirates will attack roughly once every fourteen years.
Look on the bright side. This is a game where you get to incinerate children by the millions while their parents die of decompression and radiation poisoning in orbit. It's awesome, what do a few labels matter?
Make your own map without pirates? I think of them as experience buffets. Nothing like a pirate fleet or two on the way to the enemy homeworld to put a shine on things.
Sure it's faster by half a burnt hair, but it ain't as fancy. And being fancy is what counts!
Easily recognizable terms make the world go 'round? If your inner astronomer weeps bitter tears, just pretend that it's a small collection of stars in the middle of a bunch of other collections of stars. Meh.
X3 is a 4x game as wel
No, no it's not. It's a trading sim that focuses on one area at a time. Asking for anything like x3's level of detail in a game of this scale is silly.
If you're sitting around waiting for something to do outside of the first few minutes, you're doing it wrong. Really. Managing a three front war in two or more solar systems can be taxing.
I'll be breaking my fingers now...
As long as you don't whimper too much, you'll get through this alive. *plays with the edit button* Regarding the icon size at high rez, I've found it a bit of a mixed bag. At this point zooming in on anything I want to look at has become second nature, though. The zoom on cursor feature is incredibly useful.
I would add that Beta Three was awesome. I'd honestly have bought the beta if it were the final game. Now they added space ponies. How can a person not buy a game that has space ponies? Go buy it. Or torrent Beta 3, spend five minutes staring at it's nubile flesh and 'then' buy it. Either way.
Four or five stars can make for very, very long games. It snowballs quickly and with no regard for your free time or personal health.
I've longed for a game like this since I first played Moo, and I thought I might live to see one when I first picked up Gal Civ 2. It looks pretty and plays well, with a little bit of everything I like in my home grown space operas. Xan said it, this really is one of the very few existing rts games. Thanks Stardock!
Not bothering with a cheesy campaign was a design decision, yes. Honestly, this isn't the sort of game that would really benefit from it. 4x games usually fare poorly when story driven without the help of some really powerful and time consuming scripting. I'm glad they got the meat of it done first!
Dear lord. Alright, I'm inspired.
Not once have I encountered a company as endearing to a customer as yours. Your service and attitude are both commendable, and your willingness to make your game available by download comes as a very pleasant suprise. Thank you, this customer apprieciates your effort.
