Quick diplomacy fix: make everyone start as neutral instead of shoot on sight. This would make the current diplomacy system useable atleast. You would have to declare war before your ships start shooting others down. Be sure the AI doesn't exploit it too.
I fully agree ! The best thing could be to implement it as optional: start in an universe at war or in a peaceful world.
Asking an ally for a joint attack on common enemy(ies) would also be neat.
It is possible (and useful:)): Just select a fleet/ship of one of your ally and you can ask him to attack/defend a planet or to defend thanks to three buttons in the right part of the grid. Note that you also have shortcuts (Q, D and I don't remenber the last one but just check the key bindings option) I say useful because I am using it now to
I know that we have some Battlestar galactica fan here (at least two :)): maybe we should petition because they always flee when cylon's capital ships arrive. (ok I know this is not an argument, but I just find the comparison funny :D)
Quite a little bit tired seeing post about a coward AI. Just a question: what will you do if one your fleet is outnumbered or outpowered in a fight ? Do you stay and loose all your ships in a big waste of time, resources and money ? I don't think so: you run and try to backstab the opponent. So the AI does. Don't blame the AI or game design when it is your strategy that is flawed. Try to consolidate your position, don't let the planet you just colonized without support
