If there is a nice step by step tutorial out there for the original game without the Alterian Prophecy, I would greatly appreciate if someone could link me up, i'm totally stumped at this game.

Playable races in campaign mode in Galactic Civilizations II GalCiv2 Forums

I'm about to buy GalCiv2 (huge fan of the first one) and I know that you can play all the races (even create your own) when you generate your own galaxy. But can you play as any race (plus your own) in the campaign mode, or just humans?
