On the truly large maps I do a similar method to you when you say you head for other empires and back fill. I will send them all out to the max range in the direction of the other empires, colonize and hop scotch my way to the thier territory. This usually means sending the ships out blind (and this has on occasion bitten me in the but ) but

The other bonuses I take for my custom race includes the full econ bonus and a +50% diplomacy. I never seemed to notice much effect for the morale so I took the diplomacy bonuses to get better deals and keep all the other races off my back longer. The +50 to luck usually compenstates me for the slower growth speeds in extra money in anomolies and it keeps on helping out for the rest of the game, which is why I chose that over trying to get +populatio
Now you see my starting strategy is slightly different. First thing though is I play a custom race with +50 to luck (ability and political party) and Ion engine starting tech. Like Ubertaco one of my main goals is to make that starting stipend last as long as possible. To that end however I do not buy any colony ships. Those things are more than 1k a pop when you put your best engines on them. You don't get out the door quite as fast usi

I have noticed this as well. Often times I will not want ships to cross through certin areas. Like in my last game my empire bordered the Korx empire on three sides and I wanted to start by taking a planet on the other side of the Korx from the one that was producing the troopship. If I just told it to go then it would move straight through enemy territory and die a horrilbe, firey, vaporous (I think thats a word <img src="http://images.stardock.c

Eyes of the Universe is the only one I specificly try to get... That much information is just WAY to valuable in war or peace. the rest I can live with or without.. QFT. Eyes is by far the best and the only one I ensure I grab. The rest I grab as I am able or according to the type
I sometimes get notices when the race really hates me and they want me to know about it. The leader of that race will pop up, call me ugly names, and delcare war. The other times though I will just be going along, smelling the flowers and then BOOM! a frieghter goes up in a cloud of vapor and I'm like.... 'Well crap!" and I start gearing up, by which point the enemy is already bearing down on my planets. I think a notice would be nice but
I use them with lots of engines to quickly take out unarmed enemies, never armed ships. I named my armed cargo ships Q-Ships. Link Auxiliary cruiser would be another good term. Link Learn somethin new every day. Thanks BladeVenom! As for the cargo-warships I usually build 4 or 5 of
I rank them differently depending on the game I am playing. There are times when the Yor and the Drengin will beat the tar out of everyone else. There are also times when the Altarians will over run people with influence and the Torians will conquer most of the galaxy. The same is true of most of the races, in my experiance. I think a lot of it has to do with thier starting postions. Felk the Troll
Well I'm not a software engineer by training or experiance but rather a hardware guy, so I feel kinda dirty using ANY higher level language . I have to use VB to make applications to make the hardware do what I need it to do without involving all the software guys upstairs. Fortunatly I use the programs to do a heck of a lot of hex and boolean ca
Does anyone else see the irony of it all that many of the skills required to make this game the hit it is on the market are many of the same skills required to actually PLAY and WIN the game they are selling? I LOVE Assembly! And yeah I get the same reaction Kato when I say that hehe. Of course I haven't gotten to use it in years *sniff* I'm forced to use Visual Basic around here... damn DoD job. *sigh* Felk the Forlorn
I had a nice planet once that was a PQ 8 but had a 700%, a 300% and a 100% to manafacturing. The only trouble was it darn near broke my economy to run it ( on a medium map with 6 oponents). That one planet cost so much to run I started having to focus it on social spending even when it wasnt building any buildings just to keep a cap on it. It also made it harder when I actually wanted my other planets to produce ships (when I got into wars
Well I can say for certin it wasn't the aphrodesiac because it was still very early in the game and I had gotten no indication telling me that they had it. Well that 30% might explain the Torians but what about the Iconians who also out... um.... danced me? I would think that being a sentient squirel and all I would have that down by now. Did this post even make it up? I can't seem to find it on the forums. *sigh* I can only get to it from 'my posts'. Felk the Confused
Ok so I noticed something and I have a question regarding populations. I remember reading that population growth is capped at 200 million per turn. So my questions are this... Does this mean EACH PLANET grows 200 million per turn? And if so is there a way to increase this growth rate? I ask because as I was playing a game (gigantic, tough, all common) I noticed that the only two races I had encountered
Have any of you come across Hoth yet? I got a good chuckle out of that when I colonized a PQ 4 ice planet called Hoth. Not to mention the whole Snathi thing. Someone over at Stardock really really doesn't like squirells I think. Felk the Freezing
Ok the squirrel thing is funny. I've always thought those little fluff balls have galactic domination in their hearts. This just confirms it. Next time your in-game read the species description of the Snathi. "These guys are E-V-I-L. Rumor has it that in the a desperate final attempt to finish off t
Well in the particular instance where I saw it I was using laser techs and shields against an enemy that was using the same. All of the sudden his medium ships that I was doing fairly well against now have lasers AND missles on them and they are ripping through me like a hot knife through butter! It was quite disturbing to see. I am not sure of the numbers and such but that was my observation and I was forced to change my ship configurations to keep
I have also noticed that if you trade with a planet that is another nations economic capital the trade route seems to be worth more. Felk the Trader
I kind of wish the game had a total random mode where you knew nothing of who or what was really out there. True, I can set up that game kind of, but I really know. Correct me if I'm mistaken but I believe they are adding a few such features to the game in 1.1. Random numbers and types of enemies and not being able to see realms of influence t
I hope my Diplosquirrels get to bump into your Clartoo some day.... just be careful of your stash of nuts as they have a tendency to rob a race bare in the diplomacy screen! Oh the Clartoo are quite capable of holding thier own at the trade table. I have maxed out starting diplomacy. Think anime fl
Here is what I do to spice up my games: I play a custom race called The Clartoo. They are essintially cousins of the minor race The Snathi (much like the Terrans and the Altarians). In medium to gigantic galaxies you are almost always gaurnteed (sp?) to have the Snathi pop up. Even though they are evil and I almost always go neutral I feel that the Clartoo have a bond of kinship and a responsibility to help and care for thier wayward nut
Well I am going to take a run at making research and production centers out of them again and take a closer look at what I can and cannot do with them. The starbase production increase was something I had forgotten about. I will have to add that into the mix and see what I can do with them. I made influence bases out of them mostly out of frustration when I went back tons of turns later and still found only one building built o
