Don't you think it's a tad soon to be bashing them on the boards for flaws you feel need to be addressed, when the game is just barely out of the gates?
"Barely out of the gates?" In the US, at least, it's been out for 2 months. They've posted a planned patch schedule all the way out to version 1.1 (presumably several weeks away) so we have some notion of what's coming in the next while as well. Since diplo is mentioned in none of those cases, and has in fact specifically

Actually I've found the game to be extremely stable, and as I said the post release support has been exemplary. It's also very pretty, and quite a lot of fun to watch. Unfortunately there are some specific elements (AI, diplo) that make it, IMO, not much fun to play. I'd like to think those will be corrected in time, though I'd love to be reassured on that point by the devs. I keep reading proposed patch notes and diplo doesn't seem to be getting addressed at all.
Alas, it's not about both sides being unhappy, it's about both sides making baseless accusations
How can "I don't find the single player game fun" possible qualify as a baseless accusation? And I'm hardly alone in finding the AI and the diplo system flawed, some of the games biggest supporters readily admit that both need work.
Vinraith, sounds like you need to smile once in a while
Tell me you're planning to significantly improve the AI and overhaul the diplo system before you put out an expansion and I'll give you a great big one. What's more, I'll actually enjoy the game and probably buy the expansion. Sound good? :)
but if the single player side of Sins (the diplo and the AI) don't receive sufficient attention then there's really no reason for me to continue buying Ironclad's products. I have no use for developers that neglect SP gamers. The amusing thing is that a good number of MP folks complain about the opposite - that it's only the SP crowd that's getting attention, and not them.Who's right? Neither.
Then both sides are unhappy, what do I care? All I care about is whether the S
Just because this game isn't for you doesn't make this a bad game or 'needing months of work' to get better.
And just because you do like it doesn't mean it's a great game that everyone will enjoy and that it's perfect and needs no further work. Opinion is just that. For my part, I bought it, I'm stuck with it (because Stardock's registration system is such that I can't legitimately sell it) so there's nothing for me to do but try to get the parts of the game
Damn, I must be fooling myself that Sins is a good game.
No, you just have a different opinion than I do. Sometimes people disagree about what makes a game fun to play, shocking isn't it? Sounds like you're mostly playing MP anyway, which isn't even the side of the game I have a problem with (I don't play games like this MP).
That's a little harsh, don't you think, especially considering the critical and commercial success of GalCiv?
There's no connection between Ironclad and GalCiv outside the fact that Stardock (the developer of GC) happens to be publishing Ironclad's games. I wouldn't terminate my business relationship with Stardock over this, they do excellent work, but if the single player side of Sins (the diplo and the AI) don't receive sufficient attention then there's really no reason
Sins looks more like Homeworld, neither game plays anything like Homeworld.
They're exactly like creep points in Warcraft 3. I don't know why people keep mentioning Gal Civ, as there's nothing equivalent in that game.
Yeah, only stupid people would complain about Sins being a poor excuse for a 4X game and a poor excuse for an RTS game when it was advertised as a hybrid of 4X and RTS games. Silly idiots. It's even worse when they try to constructively suggest ways the game could be improved. Everyone knows the game is objectively perfect just the way it is, just ask the braindead mainstream gaming press.
I should add that, considering its admirable level of post-release support, Sins may be worth another look a few months down the road. I wouldn't buy it now, though.
Yes, they wanted to create a non-cheating AI that has no advantages (either global or map-specific).
That's fine, but you always include a cheating AI for the highest end players, because no AI opponent (let alone one as weak as the Sins AI) is going to be a challenge for everyone. This is true of games in any genre. The best RTS AI I've ever seen (Rise of Nations) and the best TBS 4X AI I've ever seen (Gal Civ 2) both still included higher settings (which I've never need
If you're looking for a "real" RTS you're better off with WiC. Sins is a sort of odd (and IMO not entirely successful) hybrid that tries to combine RTS and 4X games and frankly doesn't result in a very good example of either. It's pretty to watch, and the scale is (as the packaging says) undeniably unrivaled, but I can't recommend the actual gameplay.
Unfair AI is the only one that currently gets an unfair economic boost (+200% AFAIK). Hard AI has no bonuses whatsoever.
So they originally shipped the game with no setting that gave the AI bonuses? That was an... interesting decision. Thanks for the answer.
The game has no strategy at all to speak of... I'm sorry I bought it frankly. It is C&C in space. Build more tanks (sorry Starships) and throw them at your enemy. Lame and dumb. Granted the space setting is cool, but it doesn't make up for the total lack of strategy. Gal Civ II is so much better than this game. It is a different game but I think this genre is better suited to turn based than real time. Play CoH, it blows this game away.
Sadly I'm forced to agree. I
At what AI level are there no economic or other gameplay benefits to either the player or the AI, such that it's just their ability to play the game against mine?
(and seemingly everyone else's)
Don't assume that silence means people agree with you. In this particular case anyone that's played the game has already seen that Spacedebris is correct about LRM turn rate, so it's not really a subject that it makes much sense to debate.
The diplo system is unplayable, just turn it off by locking teams. Yes, it drastically shortens the replayability lifespan of the game and reduces the depth of something that's already pretty shallow, but such is life. The game's a little less retarded on big maps, I suggest trying one or two of those with locked teams, maybe you can at least squeeze your money's worth out of it before setting it on a shelf and forgetting about it. I still hold out faint hope that we may see a diplo ov
I opened this expecting to vehemently disagree, but I find nothing here to disagree with. And to emphasize, a map generator is an absolute must.
bump m? I think you got cut off, there. Anyway, looks interesting. I didn't play the 2004 model, how's this one different?
Sins of a Solar Empire looks cool and all, but... I'd like to hear when that game I bought from you guys is going to be released. You know, the one I pre-ordered last year that was going to be released in december, then january, then... when?Come on guys, 5 month delays are ok if the final product is better for it, but you've been quiet for a while now and a lot of us paid for this thing already.
Quiet? They released a new beta last Thursday and Brad's posted 3 dev journ
I wanted an expansion to expand on events/political parties/UP system of GC2.
Me too, there's still a lot of potential here.
Sigh on the no new expansions, this means the one thing I wanted fixed/changed won't happen now.But that just means they can finish their other projects faster, so they can get cracking on GC3.
As with any game I adore, the notion of a sequel to GC2 scares the hell out of me. I'm confidant that expansions will do nothing but improve the product. A complete redesign, on the other hand,(and especially a complete redesign that includes multiplayer) has the potential to be a
1. This has been an issue for lots of people, me included. The response has been that they're working on a better system for it. I really hope it's soon as it's such a big part of a game like this to be put back for long. Major concerns of a game has to be fixed soon, or else people will quit playing it.
Actually in another thread the devs said they'd probably fix it in an expansion. I happen to agree that it's a critical flaw in the current design and absolutely demands
