How do you break alliances? in Galactic Civilizations II GalCiv2 Forums

I've looked in the game guide, but I couldn't find any mention of how to break off those pesky treaties. When I try attacking one of my allies ships, it claims I need to break the alliance first. Maybe I'm missing something obvious.
