I agree. In the real world border skirmishes are common without all out war being declared. Without a way to diplomatically tell another race to get the heck out of your territory, a minor incident shouldn't call for all out war.

Is the current system realistic? No. Is it simple, and fun? Yes. I've never had a problem with the idea of losing troop transports. That they are lost in the combat makes perfect sense to me. It makes sense that the first ships to land, get destroyed or are too badly damaged to take off.

This is not true. The "sneak attack" works well on bigger maps with lots of planets, too. When you can get your forces into position, and dictate the terms of engagement, and get the offensive advantage, it's a pretty huge effect. PC gaming is not dying. Console fanboys come out with that nonsense everytime a new console gets released, don't believe it. I've been hearing it for 20 years. If retail PC game sales are currently stagnant it's because more people are buying into online gaming.
