This is nitpicking, but in the interest of astronomical accuracy, I should point out that there are red stars that are not giants (actually, most red stars in the universe are not); low-mass M-dwarfs are very definately red. Also, O stars and early B stars can appear white to the human eye and are the largest kinds of stars. White dwarfs and red giants are not the only color extremes!

@ Saguinius: There are no purple or green stars. @ moose (and whoever else may be interested): While roughly speaking that is all true moose, you should remember that for most of its lifetime, a star's color is dependent on its mass (as well as the amount of heavy metals in it, but we can ignore this for now). It is also very similar to how tech research is treated in games like Europa Universalis I&II and Hearts of Iron 1&2. Another thing to consider is that the extent of an empire's ifluence is cumulative. Meaning that the influence borders we see on the map are not just the sum of the individual planet borders (as territory works in the Civ games), but a reflection of one's overall influence level (i.e. - how many UP votes you get). In a recent game using Beta 3A, I've twice had the UP vote to force everyone to switch to Star Democracy (internal name 'ChangeGovernment01' in the .xml). Later though, when I check my government type in the civ. manager, I am listed as a Star Federation.
