While I'm unhappy in principle with being assumed a thief before proven innocent, I've got no problem with DRM as long as it doesn't make things a pain in the ass, or resort to measures that, say, Starforce is infamous for. A multi-party DRM scheme actually sounds decent in that regard, since it wouldn't require messing around with things software shouldn't mess with... it'd be taking advantage of existing infrastructure in the OS/system/what have you. I know a couple people wh

You can still pretend that it is, tho'.
Madmen, all of you. If I couldn't make cool looking ships, I would have played the game as much as I did! :P (And, to avoid the obvious "...because you were wasting that time building ships" response, I don't consider time spent in the editor as game time)
It boggles my mind that anyone would hate designing the ships. I mean, I can't be the only one who played with Lego growing up. For me, it's practically the best part of the game! :P Yeah, for the most part, you need to specify the loadouts on your warships. The default ones almost NEVER take full advantage of the weapons, hulls, defenses, and miniturization you researched. If you're using Dark Avatar, there are already pre-made templates you can use and just slap weapons and stuff onto
Awww, I LIKED the huge military maintainence. Will the final game provide a way to mod that in? ;)
Uh... actually, one of the highlights of the AI is that they don't hardcode build orders, but rather build based the values assigned to the buildings. So, yes, they will. Actual results may vary depending on how you set up said building.
Fantastic, thanks for tweaking the tech costs! Ascension victories should be quite interesting...
I eagerly await a changelog, since I'm not in a position to play at the moment.
@starstriker I don't know anything about the mod you're talking about, but it doesn't sound comparable to what the OP is about.
The "mod" I'm talking about is Twilight of the Arnor, the next expansion pack for the game. I am pointing out that TA's new hull point module does allow the mechanic you are desiring (more powerful ships at an inflated cost), even if it is in a different way. That said, I do kind of like your idea, but I'd only consider it viable if ther
Not sure how these two sentences fit.
They don't. The first refers to hitpoint boosting modules, the second refers to ship sizes.
Already implemented.Huge ships = crippling maintenance and cost = powerful but few;Tiny ships = cheap and not costly for maintenace = weak but THE HORDE IS COMING!
Not quite correct. It IS currently implemented in TA, via the hull point modules. They allow you to add extra HP to your ships at very little cost to the space on your ship (the typical hull point module is about 3 space, with no sizemod whatsoever, and gives you 5 extra HP... even better ones exist). However,
Shouldn't Nazi have been capitalized?
I have a theory: it is physically impossible to criticize someone elses grammar and/or spelling without making an unintentional error in the same post, no matter the quality of your typical writing. Well, Sir Nasty, it is outside of my abilities to stop you from typing random words all in caps. However, I reserve the right to giggle uncontrollably every time I imagine you yelling said words in the midst of an otherwise normal
...aaaaand the wish lists start coming out the moment Brad says "I can still work from home"... :P
Hmm. Well, for components, I'm thinking of a line of reactor components. They'd offer a substantial boost to weaponry and defenses, but at a cost... be it less HP (volatile hardware), or simply huge monetary requirements. I'm also thinking of extending the weapon trees significantly, as it's irritating to see phasors as early in the game as you do.
Brad implied in his post that it'd be next week, so I guess that's something. But, it will have the "auto design a ship" option, and AI updates, so I'm willing to wait a bit longer. FOR NOW... (dun dun dun!)
I'm tempted to sing the closing lines of a certain Jonathan Coulton song, but we all know THAT'S been done to death several times over. ;) Get well, we eagerly await beta 5! :D
I never get why people capitalize "info" like that. I've seen it more than once.INFO being short for information I have all ways capitalize wrong or right not sure but I do
But... it isn't an acronyme! :P It's a shortened word, yes, but you generally only capitalize individual letters if they're representing an entire word. Sorry for being a grammar nazi!
I never get why people capitalize "info" like that. I've seen it more than once.
Good catch, I missed that.
Damn, it would appear that no update shall be forthcoming today. :( Ah, well! One less distraction, I suppose...
It's kind of depressing to see this come from Chris Taylor, since I really admire his approach to game design. He isn't really offering anything but anecdotal evidence for his claims. While I'm personally troubled that some people see outright theft as okay (so long as they aren't caught, of course), more DRM is not the answer. Once you start inconveniencing me by forcing me to have the CD in the drive, or jump through hoops to authenticate the product I legally purchased, or (god forb
I hope not. I still have work I need to do while my spring break is still going! :P
The biggest problem in my opinion is the tie rule.
I agree that the tie rule is a huge problem, but it's also only a problem at the very end of the game, where you're using the best possible weapons and hulls. At that point, the combat has already broken down entirely, since it's a series of one shot kills and brute force tactics. At that point in the game, expecting combat to be interesting and varied seems like a bit of a lost cause... it seems specifically designed to
First: The thread was three months old, was the necromancy really necessary? Second: The latest version of TA have the minors given an AI boost. Still obviously some work to be done, but it's coming.
Hell yes, anything that makes the end game combat less broken is fine by me. Remove it, and allow both sides to annihilate each other. Why does one side HAVE to win? After all, if I fling a singularity at you, and you fire a speed of light beam attack at me, and neither of us move, we'll both be little more than radiation spikes.
