Random50, I was thinking the same thought. I think I'll start a new thread about that pretty soon if no one beats me to the punch. Messing around with the combat simulator and using a little common sense shows clearly that ships don't have enough HP for the random system that they are in.

Marcathonas, Go try those ships in the combat simluator. The defensive ship wins at what appears to be 1 out of every 7 or 8 battles. That's not very good! I didn't do any real calulations because you can go try it for yourself. The problem is that defense doesn't always work. Sometimes the roll completely negates the attack, yes. But when you're talking about the kind of firepower ships can throw around even in the mid-game, one bad roll means a dead ship. Try the simulat

The 'Exploring effects of simultaneous combat' thread by Velben seems to suggest that while there may be some form of shift in the next version of the combat system, ships with heavy defenses still are not as capable as ships with heavy weapons. In the stats for your empire there will be one labeled Hitpoints. It will be a precentage. Take your base HP and then multiple by 1. (the precentage) and you should get your HP. In theory, at least. I think I've seen some places where this isn't true. Don't know why. But it's a good 'general rule'.

The AI in Gal Civ 2 is the best that I've seen in any 4x game. In most 4x games, the AI cheats from the word go - and in addition a new player can rather easily defeat the AI on a normal difficulty level. This isn't the case in Gal Civ 2. The casual play isn't going to be able to go in and wipe the floor with the AI on normal.
