I know it can be a royal pain, but if you manage to alt-tab out of the game (or if you're getting kicked back to windows without the program actually closing) and just let it sit for a while and then close the error message, sometimes you'll get a different message saying something about increasing memory. Well, i'm running a vista laptop that has older nvidia drivers (2/28/07) and unfortunately every driver that i've tried to get from the laptopvideo2go site has resulted in a bsod, but I have found a few things to make the game run stable for a little while at least. Maybe they can help others in the same situation until laptop manufacturers decide to release drivers more often than once every year or so...
