i think your missing the point of the "defense" ship . El conquest. Think of it as a heavy armed and armored barge. - if it can move anywhere, its a waste of space that could be used on more guns or armor

is it THAT difficult to actually look at the numbers? so the slider is a bit fucked, so what get over it. The sliders work just fine if you have an IQ above 60

you shouldnt be using Core ships anyway. so it shouldn't really be a problem
yes, some control over the combat would indeed be very nice
they create their own sphere of influence. If you play games on larger maps, you'll sometimes see small areas of influence from a faction that does not have planets anywhere near that spot. But still are the main influence in that sector simply because they placed a influence base in the area.
