This is perhaps useless trivia but I'm curious why some research in the trees has a glowing border around it? I can't seem to figure out what the criteria is. Edit: I should specify I mean the white border and not the glowing yellow that indicates queued research.

I just skimmed this but I don't think anyone actually answered the original question. On the planet screen income is self explanitory. Spending INCLUDES maintenance + BASE research (unmodified by bonuses) + production/military. So what's listed on the colonies tab is Income - Spending. You don't actually subtract the maintenance from the income because that's already included in the spending.
Normal difficulty in this game isn't full AI capability. The AI doesn't start cheating till past tough. So "tough" is what normal is usually.
No dice on directx since I have the latest version of directx9. I hadn't thought of the event viewer though and it's listing the ATI driver half the time so I'm going to try that. Kind of doubt it will help though since I know my drivers are at least newer than the last galciv patch.
I recently installed vista 64 (was on 32bit xp before) and I'm now having some occasional crash problems with it. Not so bad that I can't play but it's annoying to lose several turns every time it happens. The only repeatable thing about the crashes is that it can crash if I alt tab. It also almost always crashes when I quit the game too oddly. Other than that it can crash randomly. I'm curious if there is anything specific to vista 64 that I should
I find asteroids good in circumstances where you really want more tiles. Most of my games I like to concentrate on tech and build things like trade goods and super projects/galactic wonders. A lot of the time I need to build one of these things and I just don't have an optimal quality planet for it. If I'm running miners though it's a lot easier to find a planet where I can stuff these one-offs and still have them build fast. Every one I build
So it can go away if you stop looking vulnerable?
On the foreign report where it lists ++ and - next to stuff I see -militaristic. I had always thought this meant *I* was being miitaristic and thus they didn't like me. Currently though I have zero military in the game I'm playing and I'm nowhere near anybody. So now I'm confused. What causes this relations negative exactly? I tried searching but sadly I couldn't find anything.
I think what was hardest for me to grasp at first is that economy doesn't work anything like research and industry. You don't build money factories or anything logical like that. There no gold mining or anything along those lines either. Most beginners in strategy games want to turtle into a small area thats easy to manage but Galciv heavily penalizes you if you want to turtle. The way population and taxes works means you need to expand to compete. There
This is boggling me a bit. In some threads like say this one: https://forums.galciv2.com/102205 the quote box backgrounds are almost pure white with white text ontop of them. This makes them unreadable unless I select the text with the mouse. Does anyone know what's causing this? Is there some setting somewhere to change the theme?
Besides, elite technocracies don’t get anywhere without enough resources to feed the grinding wheels of their material-hungry processes.
I don't really care about it being realistic though.
Research is simply a means to an end in accomplishing the domination of areas.
To me all goals in a 4x simply exist to make the research system have a purpose. It's not really a 4x unless it can be played with this sort of outlook.
1. Multiple levels of the same research at the same speed and with similar costs speeds up research total
I'm talking end game when both you and the AI should both have way more than 8 of each station type (like on a humongous map or whatever). You are looking at this too logically. I'm saying it isn't fun to research via this method. Concentrating on research should be done through building research stuff. It becomes lame when I'm building trade ports or thei
Just to be clear I'm not talking about overall research speed here but what's up with the inability to generate more research speed than your opponent? This is like the no. 1 staple of 4x space games. I find it severely hard to enjoy a 4x when there is no strategy for outeching the opponents and crushing them with a few expensive awesome ships their low tech armada's can't possibly match. I find the whole rts hybrid approach highly refreshi
They really need to change it from approval to "contentment" or some such so I can sleep better at night. I feel like I'm gaming the system in an exploitive way when I let approval drop so much. If I wanted to game the system I'd pick Krynn in the first place and stack morale bonus.
I was looking through the raceconfig.xml file and I noticed a field called ResearchAdvantage with for example Terrans having Diplomacy listed in that field. What is this field? Does it actually do something or was it for a dropped feature perhaps?
I started a 1.6 game the other day with some weird racial choices to try something different. The problem is I didn't pick any morale choices. I've done this before and made do with lower taxes but this new capital is driving me nuts. Do they think a 40% morale boost makes up for the horrendous raise they added to it's food supply? How am I supposed to keep good approval early on with 16b people on a planet? I wouldn't even go near that kind of population till late game normally but
You can't turtle in Gal Civ 2 sadly. So that is probably why you are having problems overall. Also it sounds like your using a typical strategy that works in other 4x games (turtle and tech up). The reason that doesn't really work in this game is the way the economy is set up. Specifically because the more population your planet has the less tax per person you get plus a high pop gives you an approval penalty. Even worse that approval penalty lowers your mora
Lately I've been trying to get a better handle on my economy by watching my spending a bit more but one thing is really throwing me off. Countless times I'll set up a building and raise spending untill it says "1 week" yet the next turn it's annoyingly at 90% or some such. I finally got tired and tried to track down what behavior caused it and I couldn't really nail anything definitive. So I looked into the PlanetImprovements.xml and looked up the cost of the building I was trying t
