To defend yourself establish many colonies early on. I can't do this. :notsure: I'm a researcher. If you want to try to be a scientist then I would advise using propulsion early to get transports and pick on small civs, then researching frigate/battleships. This works only for early in the game and on a dificulty max of normal, great to start with.
