I'm confused by something on this page: http://jeffpinard.com/planet_management.htm Step 7: So you'll want to click the All button and make sure the planets are sorted by class (size). Step 9: I'm looking for the largest planet that's not occupied by anyone. Easiest way to do this is just look for that has no shipyard and no social projects (the space beneath the shipyard). The first planet we see is Shard IV. And it looks like a grea

Can anyone explain what it really does? It doesn't really say in the manual except that it's an important setting... Does it increase how quickly things are built, and how quickly research is made? Does is just give a multiplier to my research, military, and social bonuses? Or what does it do? I'm just curious. I'm trying to find the right settings for me - and I'm thinking of turning it on, because I get really tired of taking so long to research some things... I prefer to get into act

Linux can be very annoying; depending on what you're doing. For instance - in windows to install flash, what do you do? You click on something on the web page and it installs. In Linux? I had to download a special package - then go into the terminal and type out a series of commands to unpack it and install it. It can get annoying.

Windows 98 is a steamy pile of crap. Why someone would choose to run it is beyond me. Anyway, I've got Vista, and luckily I've had no problems with running any programs on it at all. GalCiv 2 worked right off the bat. I just keep different OS's on different drives. I've got XP, Ubuntu (Linux), Server 2003, and Vista That way I've got lots of choices for different things.

Is there a way to reset to the default game settings? Or can someone tell me what they are? I'd changed them around a bit, but I want to get them back to what they were by default, but I can't remember what they were. This is for DA by the way (since there are a few more options)

Personally, I can't stand the mega events. Call me crazy - but I don't enjoy playing a game, and then having my largest built planet for research just taken over. Nothing I could do about it; it's just gone. I quit the game and turned off those "events" as soon as that happened.

There are some great strategies here. There really needs to be an official forum strategy guide or something put up - because it would be a lot of use. Even just little things that people share are very helpful; but they're tossed about in so many threads, it's hard to find them all. I'm really bad at this game. I have no idea what to do; and I usually quit after 30-40 turns because I've no idea what I'm doing. My planets will be unhappy, I'll have random buildings on planets,

Ok... So I'm trying to learn the game, and I have a question on something confusing me. I started a brand new game, so I've done nothing at all. I wanted to see how the budget on research, military, and social work. So I set Research to 100% spending. Then I click on Earth and check my buildings. The main building that's there by default gives 24tp, but for some reason I'm getting 28tp for that planet... Where are the other research points coming from? I'm just trying to figure

I don't mean anything personal or rude by this, but I can completely see how it could be taken as so: I'm glad I'm not the only one with very little ability to design good looking ships i always see people with these huge, amazing looking ships that look like they took at least an hour or more to design. Mine are always just blah, boring, or blah looking.

I'm curious what sort of ships people here create for special tasks or needs. Not like a small fighter, but something geared more towards another task. For instance - I like to create a massive sensor ship. It's task? It sits around wherever I place it, and it has the largest sensor radius I can find on it. I put maybe one engine on it, so it can move fast, but I generally load it up with only sensors. I like having these around certain areas, so i can keep an eye out. It's the only spe

Because you're not making your own ships to use them. It's common agreement that core design ships suck. you need to make your own ships to use the items.

I suppose you're right. it depends on the game type. Unforunately, I haven't found my game type yet. If I have to research, it feels like a hassle, and I don't know what to do. If I use the God's of War, I feel like I'm cheating. If I use a smaller map, it feels too quick. If I use a larger map, it feels way too big to manage. If I have all the winning factors on, it seems pointless. Like too easy to just make a bunch of influence bases, or alliances.<

I don't know if I asked this before, or not... I'm curious if there are certain spots on certain trees that you always consider the overall best choice - and stop there. For instance - I know that most people say to never go past the first Farm upgrade... Are there others? And are there certain ones you want to get as fast as you can and build? Like Stock Exchanges? I actually tend to go for those really quickly, but I don't know if it's really worth it.

What are they going to say for something imaginary like a Graviton Gun or Level III Warp Drive? A joke or something dumb is probably better than a paragraph of meaningless technology words. How about what it does? I'll tell you the first time that I played, and a few times after - I had no idea what the improvements did... "gives us lase

Is there some kind of file that you can edit for that? Like for the race abilities and descriptions and what not (in the mydocuments\games\galciv2 folder)? If you can - it would be cool if someone would edit it to make it tell you what certain techs actually do and what not... Although, I think I'm going to uninstall the game :\ so, too late for me.

One thing I'd like to do is bypass the whole research thing - which is where Battle of the Gods comes in... However, for some reason, they decided to force you to play against 8 opponents... is there some way to disable that? I'd like to be able to play on a medium map with just 3-4 other players...

I have a problem with planets. First, I never know what to make it. I've read things like make small planets for research, medium for manufacturing, and large for economics... but I also never really know what buildings to go for exactly, what order, or when to start. Do I start building as soon as I colonize? I also have the problem that after 4-5 planets I become overwhelmed. it may not seem like a lot to some - but to me, having to worry about what 4-5 planets are b

No, don't max out miniaturization. Leave the last two techs unresearched or you will lose effective space because of how the sizemod works. Care to explain?

Thanks. Those examples are actually really cool to look over... things I never really thought about like creating a larger ship and then some smaller support ones to create custom fleets... I usually just create one main ship and make tons of them.

I'm wondering what sort of research strategies people use. Like % of research, etc... Also - what are some good spots on the tree to stop researching at? For instance, I know a lot of people only research the first farm tech... also - what do people see as the more important research techs?
