Before the forums took on their new format, whenever I went into a thread that I had been to before I would immediately jump down to where I had been on my last visit. Very convenient. Ever since the change over, I am always positioned at the beginning of the thread and now have to scroll down to where I was the last time. Very clumsy. Is this the way it is now supposed to be, or am I missing something?

Hey guys, if you want a prime example of releasing a product before it's ready, all you have to do is look at Windows Vista. It's been out for a year already and the most common user assessment as of today seems to be that "it stinks". I just came from Google News where there is an uproar about killing Win XP. MS PR says "users love Vista", Balmer has called Vista "a work in progress" and is now seems to be saying "maybe we'll let it stay around a little longer". The user rants on the news items
The Total War mods are great. Also those for the Silent Hunter subsims which are spectacular,
Here's another 2 cents worth. It would be sad to see support for GalCiv2 fade away. I'm a retired programmer myself and I know that decisions have to be made. That's the way it works. There is a GalCiv3 (way out there somewhere). That's both hopeful and scary. It's coming (maybe), but will it generate the same excitement when (if) it gets here as you now have with GalCiv2? So many wiz/bang follow up products turned out to be huge duds because by dropping the continuity they los
I use a simple naming scheme. The big benefit is that I get a sorted list on the planet ship build screen with warships on top arranged according to capability. All info comes from the ship build screen - very fast way to classify a ship - no thinking required. Any other info I might want goes into the comment field when saving the design. A few examples should give you the general idea: A3 040903 M10s9a4 is a medium hull warship, speed=4, range=0.9, scanner=3, 10 missles.
I currently play at the painful level. I haven't played the harder levels yet because it seems that one needs to really understand the game mechanics and to know of and take advantage of the various exploits in the game in order to do well at those levels. Also, almost all strategy postings I've seen omit the details about the setup conditions. Most people, I suspect, have hidden preferences that they never mention. They will favor a certain race when they play (go look at the GalCiv2 h
Also note that even though you cannot build improvements because of zero production, you can buy them and get their benefits.

I use a simple scheme. Best feature is that everything sorts out nicely on a planet's build ship screen with warships at the top. Just take the values right off the ship design screen - very fast - no thinking needed. Examples: A3 060904 M10s9a4 is a medium hull warship, speed 6, range 9, scanner 4, 10 missles, 9 shield, 4 armor (1=tiny, 2=small, etc) (B,G,M = weapons) (s,p,a = defenses) T 052406 20 is a troop transport, speed 5, range 24, scanner
The last game I played on DA was a doozy. Gigantic map, painful level, 5 random AI all of whom were evil. I was a custom race and ranked no better than 4th the entire game. The Yor held half the map, were 1st in everything, and declared war on me when about 90% of the planets were settled. When they came at me, I don't think I've ever seen as many ships in any game I've ever played as these guys had. They were everywhere. This is how the game played out--- My first step was to take out
I don't know if this is a bug or not, but I cannot explain what is happening. In my current game (Gigantic, Painful level, Random opponents), I am a Custom Race facing five Evil AI. I am at war vs the Yor. I have better diplomacy than anyone else and there are no alliances amongst the AI. When I go to the Diplomacy Screen to bribe other races to go to war against the Yor, the Attack Window for every AI race comes up empty! Nobody is willing to attack anyone! I
Another type of ship I've found to be useful --- This baby normally sits well behind the enemy lines. I normally build this on a small or medium hull (depending on galay size). Equip it with the smallest weapon you have. Add enough life support for the amount of penetration you want and (maybe) some sensors to warn you if the AI is sneaking up on you while you are in guard mode. Then load it up with maximum engines because you want this thing to move. You don't care what it cos
Eyes of the Universe ----- I haven't used it in a long time. With it, it seems that you constantly have to monitor the galaxy so that the AI doesn't sneak up on you. Instead, I've been using scouts built on a cargo hull containing decent engines and loaded to the gills with my best sensors. Park them between you and the AI in guard mode. They will light up much of the galaxy and come alive when an enemy comes into view. You get a positive early warning of any incoming AI and can back of
The game seems to have some remaining memory leaks which have not been caught yet and these will lead to the out-of-memory condition. The easiest workaround is to do an automatic save on every turn. They do not slow the game down and will allow you to recover from almost any kind of game crash condition.
I was playing a game of DA (latest update). One of the AI races owned an exclusive control trade good (hull plating) which I traded for. Later on, when I was on the diplomacy screen again, I noticed that hull plating was again being offered for sale to me by the race that owned it! This raises a couple of questions --- Currently, I don't know of any way to show what exclusive control trade goods I have successfully traded for. Perhaps the game could show them
I downloaded the file. It comes down as a .rar file. What is a .rar file? What do you do with it?
Brilliant! I love this web site.
One way to (eventually) pick up an AI resource base without going to war is to position a constructor near AI resource bases when the AI races go to war with each other. One of the first things they tend to do when at war is knock off each other's resource bases. If you have constructors lurking nearby, you can pick them up.
Rally point question --- Is it possible to give names to them? Or to locate them on the map quickly? I have used rally points but find that it gets confusing when I create a number of them.
Be prepared to spend a lot of time when playing on gigantic galaxies. I have been playing on gigantic for some time now. The setup I like to use is: myself vs 5 random AI races at the painful level - my games are set up with EVERYTHING random, no minor races, no special abilities, no events and trade on. You can get into some really wild setups with the random mix. And, on painful, you learn real quick to tailor your strategy to whatever situation you are faced with (or you wil
Am running a game in which I have researched the Subspace Annihilator. In the shipyard there is no entry for this weapon in the Weapons List. Also, the Subspace Blaster shows a Sz=6 Cost=100 Damage=8 but the Disruptor III shows a Sz=5 Cost=70 Damage=8 Why is the older weapon better than the newer?
Everyone will give you a different answer - this is because it entirely depends on the type of game you enjoy playing. You can go nuts searching for answers in the forums because so many opinions appear to contradict one another. I like games that can be finished in a reasonable amount of time. So I like to use a Medium size galaxy with three random AI opponents. Some of the settings I like to use and my reasons for doing so are --- Tough opponents: Anything less and they are w
I just downloaded DA 1.61.090 and started a game as the Iconians. I'm pretty well into the game, now. When presented with ethical choices, I've been mostly picking the evil choices. However, the game says my alignment is "saintly" and the indicator is way over to the left (the good side). What gives?
In my attempt to learn about the different races, here's what I did. Taking each race in turn, I set up each game using a medium size galaxy - three random AI races - all of them tough - no random events - no special abilities - slow research - all forms of victory enabled. This proved to be an interesting exercise. You learn pretty quickly about the strong/weak points of each race. I was able to win no matter what race I played as long as I took advantage of each rac
When the AI takes one of my planets, it would be nice to be told what tech of mine was lost to them.
