I would love to see a ship editor that allows you to create more realistic looking ships with a much greater degree of freedom in designs. The cartoony feel of the gal civ 2 ships was the only thing that annoyed me... Would be nice to be able to create any type of ship of any size and just have a cost on the size and the Tech, Systems, Armor, Ect. and not have to use pre made parts and hulls.
Using pre-made parts is, IMHO, the way to go. It's very easy. As Scout

Wow - cool arcade like game. Dunno if I have enough time to play it much, but perhaps Stardock could get some customization ideas from it for GalCiv 3? The simple rotation we have right now is nice - but I'd love to see something that allows folding/unfolding like those images you have.
Null point of discussion..........
Pretty much, no matter that people feel/think, Microsoft is unlikely to change their pricing.
This is a bit dependent on audio drivers. My motherboard's built-in Realtek sound automatically changes the output when I plug or unplug something, and the drivers give me controls to switch between inputs/outputs. In addition, I think Windows 7 may have improved it a bit? I'm in Vista currently, so I can't check it.
I can confirm: In Windows 7, the sound device can be selected, and the device properties sheet can be opened directly from the volume mixer
As MS did for MsDos and Win 3.1.....releasing them free.
Where?
Giving them free will at least help students...
They offer students some great, steep discounts. I got Microsoft Office for about $60.
The main difference between vista and windows 7 is a few new apps.
I take it you haven't tried the beta. There are some pretty big UI changes. GenBlood: I don't think there should be different pricing poin
I don't see why a dev team as resource-rich as Windows or Office can't do a better job of enabling 'improved' UIs to step aside whenever an experienced user would prefer a 'classic' set of controls.
Becuase: It was a big change, and maintaining two sets of controls likely would have been a lot of work. Their statictics say that relatively few people actually performed a lot
MicheleJane posted while I was writing up my response . . .
After all the crap I've had to experience with Vista...it literally ate up XP....Vista users deserve it.
No. Sorry if you had a lot of troubles with Vista, but that doesn't mean you should get their next OS for free.
I DONT agree that Windows 7 Should be 64-bit only, for one reason my pc is JUST BARELY too old, Dell XPS Gen 3 (Gen 5 IS 64 compatible), is NOT 64 compatible but with windows 7 still packs a performance punch.
Agreed - but I still think it should be the default if it's being installed on a system that is 64 bit capable.
It had better one hell of an improvement. XP's defrag is COMPLETELY WORTHLESS. I doubt I will EVER use a M$ defrag again. Your better off
I love their description of Spore: "Best Evolution Simulation Game That Actually Promotes Intelligent Design" [e digicons][/e]
Cargo hulls are normally intended to be for the utility class ships - they're for the ships that don't fight. However, as the others have mentioned, they can be incredibly useful at the beginning of the game because they can hold a lot of stuff before you've researched the larger attack hulls.
IMHO, paying more for software than for the computer it runs on is a bad idea. . . . and Vista Ultimate practically costs that much. Frankly, $50 is where I start being very careful about what I buy, and $100 is about the cutoff of "not worth it, no matter what it does." IMHO. I managed to get Vista at a greatly reduced price through a special offer. It may also depend on my income - with a full time job, I'd be willing to pay more, I'm sure, but right now I'm not in s
Raven: No, of course they don't support Windows 7 yet. It's not out of beta, and I'm quite certian that WB will need many changes to work with Windows 7 (there are a lot more elements in Windows 7 for WB to skin). It's gonna be a while until they have full support for Windows 7 for all of their products. If you're having troubles in Vista, however, that's a different story - they should support Vista. Ask support if you're having troubles in Vista.
For rendering landscapes, Terragen is the best. After trying both Bryce and Terragen - I really could never get my landscapes to look as nice in Bryce. They always ended up looking low-res and the textures always just looked wrong. You just can't beat the per-pixel detail of Terragen. It's not freeware, however. Otherwise, I play around with these programs: Art of Illusion is a decent open source renderer/modeller. Not as high end as Blender, but pretty easy to use.<br
IMHO, 64 bit should be the default for a clean Windows 7 install. . . . and this is very good news! 64 bit is indeed the future, and I'm happy to see it's happening :). Both Vista and Windows 7 beta are 64 bit on my machine :). FYI, the "compatibility layer" is nearly perfect. I have no major compatibility issues with the 64 bit versions of either Vista or Windows 7. Security applications and drivers had some troubles at first, but those issues are largely resolved.</p

I like Alfonse's ideas, although I understand Jonnan'spoint of view. It's basically the whole having lots of control vs keeping things simple. Basically, some people like a lot of fine grained tweaking and "bean counting", while others like to just have an abstracted, high-level view and don't really want to care about all of the details. The trick is, of course, satisfying everybody. Basically, where I'm seeing a lot of games in this genre headed is towards so
Dual/triple booting is always a bit tricky and risky. Especially with Windows OSes. You've got three OSes, each wanting to write its own boot loader when you install it, nothing really cooperating. Check to make sure your XP partition is marked as being bootable. It may also be that the last OS you isntalled didn't detect everything correctly when installed. I can't really offer that much help, except that frankly the more OSes you try to stuff onto one computer, the more troubles you
Just installed Windows 7 Beta....How can I get Object Desktop to activate on Windows 7...I.E. Windowblinds keeps telling me it cant write the activation signature...How can I fix this...
I guess it's time to renew my subscription and see if I can help you . . . EDIT: Ok. Yeah, not all programs seem to work. The massive UI changes seem to affect WB to the point where it simply doesn't seem to work at all.
Grab a Linux Live distro on another computer, write it to a CD-R, put the CD into your own computer, format the drives (repartition first if you know how), reinstall Windows . That is the only way to know for sure.
Maybe you should try a fresh install of W7, then install only the Windows Update files, then Impulse before anything else.
This is good advice. We have no clue what's causing it, but we do know that Impulse seems to install fine on our systems with a clean setup.
The screenshot was taken from a Windows 2003 Server during a remote desktop connection and it's the default IE UI.
Likely IE6 or earlier, then. Back when the browser wars was all about adding more features and they weren't particularly concerned with simplicity of the interface. Frankly, IE6 was a joke. The joke that beat Netscape, but still a joke. IE 7+ is greatly simplified. It has about the same number of items as Konquerer.
By the way
Yes, I did. Take a look at the screenshots below.
Great screenshots! Items circled in IE: 9 Items circled in KPDF: 11 Items circled in Konquerer: 16. I'm noticing a trend. That's not the default UI for IE7 or IE8. In fact, it doesn't even look like IE7 or IE8. K3b has black up, back, home, and reload icons, while in Konquerer they are grey/blue.
