Ship Upgrades in Bug Reports GalCiv2 Forums

I have 1.4x and I'm a new player. Why do certain core ships like Defender and Star Fury have a component (rail gun) that takes up no space and seems to have no attack. Also the initial colony ship has two colony modules, one of which takes up no space. Are they just there for appearance?
