I actually can, but I won't. At one point I even had the cracker's IP address, in fact. From that, you can imagine all havoc I could create in his machine if I wanted to (assuming the guy is not using a VM when cracking software). Not worth the time or the risk, I only use my powers for good (tcham tcharam, insert appropriate super-hero music to match my current Avatar). ;-)

There is actually a bit of truth in the history above. :-) Let me start by saying that I really hate with a passion the type of protections that inconvenience legit users (e.g; hardware locking, online activation, etc...), but I wasn't born yesterday either. So the protection I build into the code, although home made, is strong. Many years ago, when I still used serials numbers that were really easy to make keygens for, a well known and competent Russian group of crackers

Moscow, Russia April 1st 2012 - The Nemo.ru group behind all the latest cracks of Winstep software has filed a 'Cease and Desist' order with the New York supreme court against Winstep Software Technologies. The group argues that Winstep's prolific update schedule and constant changes to the software protection code interfered with their ability to provide quality cracks to the general population. The group is suing for an unspecified amount and have requested

When you click on the arrow next to the Shutdown entry in the Start Menu, a pop up menu appears with other options (Switch User, Log off, etc...). If you look carefully at that screenshot, the popup is not visible, only the pop up's drop shadow.

Nope, not at all. There are always alternatives, listen to Zubaz. :) When Weather.com closed their XOAP feed in November with barely any advanced warning (two weeks warning, or so), I got pissed off and coded support for two alternative weather feeds (besides METAR). If one fails, the other is used as a backup. In the mean time I found out that the XML feed is still available, so now Winstep applications have four possible feeds: METAR/NOAA, Weather.com, MSDN and Google.

The problem is that METAR information needs a script to parse it from the HTML page and decode the information itself. Here is an example of a METAR string for the current conditions at Lisbon Portugal: 2012/03/29 18:00 LPPT 291800Z 10007KT CAVOK 21/03 Q1014

Sysmetrix also uses METAR. METAR information is retrieved by parsing a METAR coded string from an actual web page at NOAA, so it's unlikely it will ever go down unless they change the URLs or the page format. The problem with METAR is that it does not include forecast information, only very detailed current conditions, which are reported by airports all over the world. The other problem is that because the information relies on airports and not weather stations, METAR does

I'll post a proper announcement here at Wincustomize later today. I still have to adapt the announcement bitmap backgrounds to WC's white background, but I'm bushed at this point and need to get some sleep. This release is a MONSTER update though, check the news for free Winstep Nexus dock HERE and for Winstep Xtreme <a href="http://www.winstep.net/news/march_20_2011_winstep_xtreme_v12.2_

From what I understood, one fine day and without any warning whatsoever, he apparently decided to kill his online persona. As for Matt, the man behind the nick, last time someone checked on him he was still alive and well. Guess he just got tired of all this, eheh. :) I for one was sad to see him disappear, and I hope he decides to come back one day. Great artist and a great person too.

Where some see a problem, others see an opportunity. :-) The problem, Pacov, is not on capitalizing on other people's mistakes. The problem is when other people's mistakes and/or intentions are so serious they can bring down your company too. Brad has already been through that with IBM's OS/2. Windows 8 is not about Metro. Windows 8 is about Microsoft wanting to kill the Desktop so it can start anew, but this time controlling the destiny of everyone else and profit

JcRabbit rubs his hands in eager anticipation of the sales he will make of Winstep Xtreme when Windows 8 comes out because of the NextSTART component in Xtreme (NextSTART is a completely customizable and skinnable Windows taskbar and Start Menu replacement). *1 Assuming Microsoft will somehow be able to trick/force/bribe/blackmail people into upgrading to Windows 8, of course.
