Well from what ive heard the ai is tougher when there are more planets because it is good at micromanagement but it is not very good at dealing with large distances on big maps.

Several times in 1.8g I ran into a bug where the ai signs peace treaties with you without asking you first. I was at war with the Drengin when suddenly I get a message "Drengin Empire has signed a peace treaty with Terran Alliance(me)" Other than that 1.8g works very well.

Its kind of a balance. If you colonize too many planets too quickly you might kill your economy but once the population of those planets increases to a high enough level they should be able to pay for themselves. However a factory or lab planet will always be spending more than you can get from it in taxes. Thats why you need to have economy planets to support them.

Colonies do not shoot. Their only defenses are ships in orbit. You cannot build attack or defense modules on a colony. Orbital Fleet Manager allows orbiting ships to fight as a fleet, without it they are attacked one at a time. Planetary Defense gives a 25% increase to your planets defenses against invasion by troop transports. It will make your planet more likely to come out on top in the event of an invasion. Shields will still deflect missile and mass driver damage but they will be square rooted. 4 shields against a missile is the same as 2 point defence. The other defenses are the same way.
