Think how long it would take to really explore before you seed a planet with a colony. Early colonies could seed "M type planets" in the old Star Trek vernacular, but other types would take extensive terraforming. They already do, sorta, in DA. At least, the extreme environment techs are fairly extensive research, on their own branch, and you have to do it a couple of times to get full use of that type planet. And of course you can't terraform them at

Try searching for posts by Iztok Bitenc, he's donw a lot of research and publication on this. drrider
Boy, I play a different style than you guys. I love just manage large empires and will often disable influence victories just because I they end the game just as I am really starting to enjoy it. I enjoy creating a balanced and vibrant economy and find crushing other civs under my heels to be annoying and wasteful. Frequently 80% of my game is after I could have easily won. Gosh, Scintor, what difficulty level are you playing? In my games at Crippling an
See recent announcement of next expansion module, Twilight of the Arnor, elsewhere on this web site. The concept is there. drrider
Well, one reason evil positions are popular in games (and other fantasy roles) is because the player would NEVER take that ethical stance in life, or even in a multiplayer environment. But it is hard to actually hurt or REALLY be cruel to a batch of memory locations and electrons. Also evil gets cool weapons, and free SB modules. drrider
Hmmm...Divine, you almost convince me to try a Good finale again. Particularly given Iztok's contention that Defense systems are ascendant in DA combat until very late in the game. drrider
Hey, kryo, (since I know you review all the updated threads eventually) As we all know, Galactopedia no longer works with latest GC2 version and is not being updated by creator. (you did know that, right?) Sure would be nice, if all the features have not been put to bed yet, if a similar capability were to be included with ToA. Better than a tech tree poster. drrider
1. Why are beam weapons so popular, when missiles are so powerful? In addition to Divine's cogent answer, another point: the Evil Alignment is extremely popular among conquest oriented players. Evil allows you to research Psyonic Beam, if your beam tech is up to the right level already. Psyonic Beam has the best kick to cost ratio, and smash to space ratio of any weapon in the middle technology zone. drrider
This seems like the thread to mention it - is it just me, or are the tanks doing NOTHING? Every time I invade or get invaded, all but one tank gets destroyed, and they don't even shoot - they just... toddle along, waving their silly crane/guns in the air until they blow up. Why aren't they shooting? I hope you realize that what you see in the animation, other than the general level of shooting, breaking, falling down on each side, has nothing to d
Yes. Discuss the matter directly with Stardock Sales via e-mail rather than the general forums, at [email protected]. And whatever you do, DO NOT install the Dark Avatar license, if you hope for a refund etc. Once you've registered that license, they are very unlikely to revoke that transaction. drrider
Really, all they need to do to fix 90% of the complaints I've seen on the espionage system, is to allow you to assign a spy to simply collect info on the civ, at a lower probability of detection, without sabotaging anything. Possibly you could plunk him down on the planet capital. drrider

It should be more simple. I don't know how the combat system in DA works, anyone? Where can I find this? Search in the Dark Avatar sub-forum, with the keyword "Combat". Reserve a free evening to read all the hits. Note that there was at least one significant tweak in the last update, so give precedence in reading recent posts/replies on the subject by kryo and code critter. drrider
Some of the anomaly ideas, at least have already been identified as in v1.7 (apparentlyly now 2.0) update. drrider
I'm also not really complaining about the situation, I'm happy to play DL v1.4x. I think it would be nice if I could play the DA that I paid for almost a year ago but installing SDC on my computer is simply too high a price to pay. If not for the outcropping of these threads I wouldn't have even mentioned it as I haven't really mentioned or complained about it for the past year. Just not doing DA also seems like a tremendous high price, Mumblefratz, espe
You paid for 1.0, son, as is, as explicitly stated in the EULA. Everything else is provided by Stardock as an incentive and to retain customer interest. Now, act and speak more civilly to the nice people, ask your question about is there any way around the I-cafe limitations you currently have to live with, and see if our friends at Stardock can come up with something to aid a serving soldier. So, do we correctly understand that there is no drop or hot spot available to you wh
Real short and unsophisticated answer - you can find more detailed discussions by trolling the forum. If you intend to specialize planets, and beyond the Painful level you should, ~ 75-80% of your worlds should be money / econ / farm / pop worlds. Maybe down to 65% when you get used to it. drrider
Wife, the librarian, who consumes critically reviewed (and quite a bit of 'other') SF like the Doctor ate jelly babies, warned me off the Dune follow ons, then later said that the last one was apparently worth it. I did get about 1/2 way through the 2nd one (Children?) before the stamina gave out. I skimmed a couple of the others. I used to warn young readers, "Frank Herbert got flicked on the head one day by God; he saw the glowing words, wrote them down, and produced one of the 1/2
Gentlemen, I guarantee you that with my current installed v1.61, cntrl-n DOES NOT stupify the AI (or if it does, then the state needs to revoke my driver's license). I say this from the vantage of 6 consecutive losses trying to learn to beat Obscene; I've used cntrl-n a lot on each set-up, 'cause I'm trying to mitigate the learning curve. Also because I play on Rare everything, and a poor homeworld will make you a minor power equivalent real fast. At least I have ma
So, decison time. Most worthy of my Fall Splurge - AMD quad-core, or 'Twilight'? Hmmm... Maybe that's AMD quad-core because of 'Twilight'. Can I sell that line to spousal unit? Real question: Will there be a Platinum (aka 'We Want Your - Gold') Edition in time for Christmas? 2nd Real question: Since Galactopedia is no longer being maintained by its independent creator, and doesn't work with the latest version of GC2:DA, will there be a Galactopedia-like fu
I always thought it was to simulate the static effect at the begining and end of a transmission since it seems to be at the very begining/end of the video loop. Yeah, but it only seems to happen with the Yor Collective... Er...that is a deliberate stylistic ('set-design'?) effect; the Yor have raw energy arcing around the homestead occasionally - but don't really notice or care. drrider
There are a LOT of situations that COULD start WWIII: Pakistani and Indian tensions could flare up, Iran invading Isreal might also set the world ablaze, North Korea doing pretty much anything could also be very bad, and there hundreds of others. Of course, some of these situations are more proboble than others. That's my two cents. I think the Pakistan / India confrontation is the current greatest risk of a nuclear conflict, but perhaps surprisingly I
As for the strongest economy in the world, I am not sure but I believe the States is running a deficit at the moment. You shouldn't confuse the budget of a national government with the national economy. And governments sometimes go into debt for different reasons than individuals do...sometimes to help maintain the strength of the economy (i.e. avoid printing more money and devaluing). (Though mostly they do it just because the Powers That
You have the 'all' column of your building menu selected (at the top of the column), so you are seeing every generation of technology. Though there are sometimes strategic reasons for building earlier, less productive buildings, I recommend that until you get used to the tech tree you change the selection to 'newest'. Re the Research Coordination Center: the 'main sequence' lab buildings produce a fixed number of tp's per building, increaseing as you get the technology for be
