To the people who don't like Steam (l'm one of them): Steam and/or non-Steam - it's Stardock's business decision. To buy or not to buy - that's our, the potential buyers', decision. Stardock and Steam don't really care whether you buy enthusiastically or grudgingly - all they are interested in is THAT you buy and transfer your money. Nothing wrong with that. But don't forget that it's the paying customers which make Steam big, not the Stardo

There is no standard approach concerning multi-language support in the gaming industry. The decision for or against multi-language support is influenced by two conflicting factors: costs (for translations, sometimes voice actors) and revenue expectations (acceptance on foreign language markets). Both issues are highly non-trivial, and the amount of money involved can be quite high. <span style="font-size: x-
My personal view is that there might be two issues (or at least one of them): - Get EU on Impulse (and distinguish it from the rest of the GC2 products) - Offer an update of EU which doesn't give you the base game at the same time. (To wait for 2.01 would have been an excellent reason for the delay, but now that 2.01 is available, but EU customers still can't have it, this excuse has disappeared into nowhere) I have GC2 and EU installed in parallel (in 2
gaussflayer and Manaburn: Please have a look at the post that started this thread. It contains a clear commitment to making 2.0 available for EU within days - that was 3 weeks ago. Not a legal commitment, and there is no legal obligation to produce and release anything at all, I'm aware of this. But it motivated me to purchase EU, believe it or not. I can't see an insult in ASKING people for a status update. Or do you expect me to assume that people's words are no
How about telling your paying and increasingly unhappy EU customers what the status is, what's preventing you from making 2.0 available for said customers, and when approximately we can expect 2.0 to become available for us? Is "before the end of the year" a realistic estimate? Or is the problem so huge that you can't even estimate when it's going to be resolved?
I agree - in the legal context. Politically, the EC does have more power than I, and can influence things I can't (unlikely they would go against Stardock, though ).
I myself am not using pirated software, and I have not yet sold any of my legally purchased software packages, nor do I intend to (unless my software is having the value of the Blue Mauritius ). I may consider to give it away for free, to a friend or a relative, though. That's what I'm doing with books, music records or CDs, etc. But I can't do this with GC2. I appreciate that there are people out there who would crack everything or
When you read the threads concerning slow internet connections or the availability of DA or GC2 Gold in Europe or in retail stores, you will notice that there are quite a few guys out there who are stuck with DL, for various reasons.
Points taken. To sell through internet-based channels only may indeed be the only way for smaller companies not to lose money. I myself am an IT professional - and I don't trust the internet when it comes to money. And I've seen too many companies come and go to trust them to be around in a couple of years when I get the idea to play a game again and would need their help to re-install it (because I had thrown it off my hard disk or purchased a new PC). What I find more difficult to u
Good luck, then, Stardock, I hope your products sell well enough over the internet that you don't need us oldfashioned or technologically handicapped retail buyers! I'll be happy to give my money (well, some of it at least) to companies who show more interest in doing business with me.
The keyword is "RETAIL"! Just like certain companies would like to push their customers towards internet-based distribution models, there are customers who prefer to buy in a retail store. As far as DA is concerned, Stardock doesn't seem to be very interested in this category of customers in Europe.
Now that we know that we'll never see a retail version of GC2 Gold or DA in Europe ("put on indefinite hold" was the wording, if I remember correctly), I wonder whether we may get it through the backdoor, so-to-speak, via TA. Any plans, guys?
2 new opportunities to do some (many?) of your customers something good: - make the new add-on available in retail stores (don't forget Europe!) - make GC2 2.0 available for all buyers of GC2, not just for the buyers of DA (who are not the only ones who have paid for GC2 already)!
Just read Cuddlelumps's contribution and must say that I agree whole-heartedly. Piracy is an issue, but if PC game sales decline, then piracy is not the main reason. Other reasons are, among others and like Cuddlelump states, lack of innovation, too much emphasis on graphics rather than gameplay, etc. Let me add a couple of points: - Pirates help to sell games, too (marketing people know what I mean). - Piracy is used by the game manufacturers / distributors as an alibi to keep
I wasn't talking about patches, just about releasing GC2 Gold in Europe (retail). 3 months ago it was said that it would happen, but not right now. No update since then (to my knowledge). I think it's legitimate to ask for an update and to voice concerns whether or not it would happen at all. Regarding the second add-on, let me quote from the August 2007 newsletter I received from Stardock by e-mail today: "Galactic Civilizations II: Twilight of the Arnor. New expansion pack co
It's 3 months after we heard that it's going to take "a little longer" to get GC2 Gold to the European retail stores. 3 months is quite a long time in this fast-paced business, and long enough to ask will it ever come (or does it still make sense to release a European retail version at all, in business terms)? Meanwhile the second GC2 add-on has been announced, which no doubt will also not appear in European retail stores, neither stand-alone nor in "platinum" (or whatever you call it versio
Ascension – do I think it’s possible? Eternal life – do I think it’s possible? People, cars, animals, pebbles, etc suddenly rising to the sky – do I think it’s possible? The Yeti, Don Quixote, James Bond, Asterix knocking on my door – do I think it’s possible? Depends what you mean by “possible”. As an intellectual concept, all of the above (and more) are possible – nothing prevents the human mind from wandering and inventing. As a description or prediction of the (or a) rea
I’d like to see a remake of Daggerfall (TES 2) with the Morrowind or Oblivion engine. Daggerfall has a great story and atmosphere, but suffers from its huge, “modular” and confusing dungeons. And the cities were just too big (most of them anyway) – looked nice, houses, people, animals, etc, but too much eventless walking or riding to get from the gate to your destination or simply from A to B. It’s still on my hard disk and whenever I play it (occasionally) I can’t help thinking of what Dagg
Mitara, you are saying "The story behind Lost Empire is similar to that of the origin of Galciv. The first game came in 1990 and was made by a company called FLP, and was a good competition to the old VGA planets back then. That game was just called Pollux (v1.26 was latest)." Do you have more information about Pollux, or do you now if it is available for downloading or purchasing?
Geminisama: I'm not bitter - don't mistake me. Amused and somewhat cynical would describe it better. And you are right: Stardock haven't said no. Except to selling a European version of DA - not sure that that's a wise decision. Let's see what happens.
Remarkable business decision (not to make DA or GC Gold available in European stores), given that the European market is bigger than the North-American one. I agree that the American and European business cultures (among other things) are different, so you would have to use a different approach to be successful in Europe, but to stay away from this interesting market? - well, it's your decision.
I'm not sure why I can't scroll through pages 2 etc of the forum threads, but be this as it may, I would like to add a couple of games which I feel are worth mentioning, in no particular sequence: - "Stars!". In my opinion, still one of the best turn-based 4X space games, despite (or because of?) its lack of graphics. - "Mordor - The Depths Of Dejenol". An RPG veteran, the best of the Rogue-like category, in my opinion (has some, but not too much graphics) - "Morrowind
