Equal military ranking just doesn't seem to cut it in negotiations. The AI only starts to be suitably impressed once your military rating significantly outshines theirs.

Many people, including me, at least choose some bonuses to economy and/or population growth and/or a related super ability. Besides that, it helps enormously to just colonize other planets but not build on them yet, with the exception of a few planets, say your homeworld, 1 research planet, 1 production planet to build more colony ships. For larger maps you may need to go up to 4-5 planets being developed, in particular one "colony ship builder" closer to the outskirts of your territo

There's always been a theory that some "random" mega events are not entirely random but influenced by how you've played the game so far. E.g. the peacekeepers would more often show up if the game has been quite focused on aggression Not sure if it's really the case but it could very well be and that would also explain why people that stick to 1 gameplay style see some events far more often than others.

I guess I should do the same but then focusing on military victories that I haven't sufficiently pursued in the past. It's often fun to revisit a game after a few years... and notice that you still know the workings [e digicons]:)[/e]

If they have access to a certain tech, it will show up in the trading screen. Whether they are willing to trade it for any price, is a different matter. What also makes a big difference between civilizations is their level of diplomacy compared to yours - this may make a trade with 1 civilization feasible, and totally impossible with another.

2. Note that the techs that show up in the trade screen are all the AI's techs, not necessarily the ones they would trade under any conditions. And it's known that the AI will simply never trade certain technologies, in particular when it comes to weapons. I believe space mining and a few technologies related to morale are also impossible or nearly impossible to get via trade.
Well, I only went onto 'challenging' because 'normal' seemed too easy on the first game I played. Very little challenge. Maybe, it was just a good roll in that game? Is 'challenging' really quite difficult even for experienced players? What about 'tough'? How does that compare to 'challenging'?
As I couldn't explain it more in detail than what's in the wiki:</

What difficulty are you playing on? In my experience from games at challenging / tough / painful difficulty it's rare to see races surrender after a short exchange of hostilities, usually they tend to continue the war and even bribe their way out unless they've lost a significant part of their planets.

The techs with a star are unique to that race in the sense that they are the only one able to research it. Once you acquire it through trading, you get the usual benefits from that technology. Especially the minors are perfect to sell techs to early on in the game, as that can help your economy to stay afloat. The added benefits are that it causes the minors to develop faster; in particular technologies that give them access to tech / e

Some more ideas or further expansion on ideas that were already posted above: - Especially in a huge galaxy, planet grabbing is key so make sure you have 1 planet that can produce colony ships fast + add some engines on those ships. Get a few planets up and running, colonize the other but don't build anything on them yet because the maintenance costs would kill you. Leave those planets empty until either your economy has improved or until the planets become almost self-funding

Esteemed council, Once again congratulations to our military and at the same time my condolences to the families of our fallen soldiers. I am actually delighted to see that the Yor built a technological capital as this will significantly boost our research capacity once we claim that planet. I do trust that the necessary efforts will be taken to overhaul the conquered Yor planets to make them more suitable to our needs. It is unfortunate
It certainly has a unique quality. Grim Reaper gone cool. Or is it funky?
Or something else [e digicons]:X[/e] The lowest planet quality that is worth colonizing will also depend strongly on the size of the galaxy and number of planets. In a tiny or small galaxy you don't have such great chances of coming across many high PQ planets so anything as of PQ 6 or 7 might be useful to grab, whereas in large/... galaxies you

Esteemed council, First of all I would like to congratulate the Commander and our military as a whole with the results they have achieved thus far, they are truly impressive! I too am delighted to see the excellent state our economy is in but would like us to proceed carefully, we should not allow our expenditure to get out of hand, causing us to plunge into debt the moment the economic boom wears off. With regards to research I agree we should be able to afford neutra

In order not to clutter the other thread: I can only speak for myself but as a result of the average pace of the game (not meant as criticism!) and hectic times at work, I don't check this thread often enough to see if anything new happened... I can only recommend that we all check in here a bit more often so that we don't become the blocking factor for you Tolmekian.

Esteemed assembly, First of all, I would like to thank the commander for sharing the excellent news on the war we waged against the Silicoid; the planets we conquered will make for an interesting addition to the empire. While I agree that this is the right time to strike against the Yor and especially focus on claiming their homeworld, I am also concerned that the Thalan will strongly benefit from the Yor weakness: things must be going really badly if the Yor are desparat

Esteemed Councillors, Let me elaborate a little on the reason why I suggested we research bigger hulls and stronger weapons; my concern lies not in the feeble resistance the Silicoid could put up, but rather our overall military power and even more so how this is perceived by the other races. Many of them are known to take hostile action against any race they deem weaker than themselves. I would like to congratulate the Viceroy on the brilliant negotiation proposal with the Dr
