Sometimes that only thing that has saved my bacon in a game has been the fact that my original survey ship has picked up considerable bonuses. In the game I played last night the _only_ reason I was able to fight off the horde of battle cruisers launched by the pirates was because of my survey ship. This was fairly early in the game and the pirates had taken out basically every other ship in the galaxy and all but two starbases. Another point is that in a longer game s

Just an odd thought...I haven't had the chance to check it but in the game I played last night (tiny galaxy). The Torians were going starbase happy and putting up starbases all over the place. The placed one in my home sector, right next to my own starbase. I wonder whether this bug comes into play in that circumstance. I.E. can you cause another race's production to tank merely by virtue of putting up a small starbase in a sector where they already have a developed starbase?

There seems to be something wonky with fleets. Sometimes, I don't often make extensive use of fleets, but not all the time when I press the button for "End of Turn" the turn processing appears to continue indefinitely. If I disband the the fleet (I don't often have more than one) the turn finishes processing as usual. I can then reform the fleet and proceed. I'd say this happens about 10% of the time for me.

Betaman, You can only play the Terrans but you don't have to play against all the alien races. You have the option to remove as many of the alien races as you would like, you do have to leave at least one in play though. :) The ability to specify what victory conditions you would like to have for a given game has been on the list of desired features for quite a while and at this point the last word from the games creater, Brad Wardell, is that it will be added post 1.0. <b

I don't think either is a clone of the other. They are both 4x strategy games but they have a totally different feel. This has been discussed before but GalCiv dates back quite a ways.

Sometimes it's really hard to tell whether the triple research event is actually doing anything. It may be impacting the actual time it takes to research a tech but it does not seem to change the "time to research" that is shown on the technology screen. Often when I get this event my empire is already producing a fair amount of research which makes it even harder to tell.

Steevodeevo, I agree with you on the random events. Quite a few of them seem to be problematic: 1. Speed x 3 = no more fun in the game. 2. Research x 3 = ? I haven't been able to determine whether this one actually works. Once this event kicks in the stated completion times for research don't seem to decrease when you are choosing a tech in the technology screen. Normally when I get this event my empire is already producing a decent amount of research s

This late in the process it's unlikely that new features will be implemented for release 1.0. The "planetary overview" feature you propose has been mentioned several times by the beta testers. It would definitely be a nice feature. If I were a betting man I'd say it's a 1.x addition but I don't remember anything specific on this one from Stardock.

Only if you get the win screen and subsequent summary screens. :) For a long while the only route to getting the tech win was to research the...I think it was "Trans-human" technology...which was the final "Neutral" morality technology. All the other tech win routes didn't work. This was in Beta 3. I haven't been able to research the entire tech tree in Beta 4 without winning some other way before I can complete the tech win.

Red101, I don't know if this is the problem you are seeing but... There is a bug in the current beta where if a ship has gained one or more experience levels the current HP level is not saved and restored correctly while Max HP is. The result is ships that didn't have damage before saving do have damage after restoring.

I have won with all four victory conditions. A tech win is pretty straight-forward, it just takes a while. A Political win is the same as a conquest win but any race you are allied is one less you have to conquer. Since the cultural win condition was introduced I've often found myself getting an inadvertant cultural win when I was aiming for another win condition.

On closer examination it seems that the behavior I reported in bug #2 only occurs if the subsequent constructors are "offscreen" or outside the current visible area on the main map when another constructor upgrades the starbase. My guess is that it's an inadvertant side effect of the changes to the pathfinding code Brad mentioned. The one where "offscreen" ships "jump" from place to place rather than _really_ going from point to point.

Jack, I'm not quite sure how to answer your question... The destination point is invariably an already constructed starbase. The only thing that _may_ be changing is that between the time the constuctor was dispatched and the dropout from autopilot is that another constructor may have upgraded the same destination starbase. I'll have to keep an eye on it but I don't _think_ that is the case in 100% of the cases.

1. Beta 4B is the most stable of the betas so far. I haven't had a single crash to the desktop. 2. I like the new UP issues, especially the "war tax" issue. 3. I'm playing a gigantic galaxy and performance is pretty darn snappy on my 833 MHz Pentium 3. There are some things amiss though... 1. There are still some timing issues that unless you know about them can lead to what appears to be a lockup. Please see my post entitled "4A - More timing wier

After the United Planets voting screen came up I hit the "Done" button after the vote had been tallied and an espionage summary screen came up to announce that my level of infiltration of the Torians had gone up but the espionage screen only flashed into view for a fraction of a second to be replaced by most of the main interface screen. The main map was visible but everything on the right side (the mini map, etc..) was covered by what appeared to be the portion of the espionage screen
