2 people trying to connect to each other when both are behind firewalls can be messy. If your ports are forwarded then there's not too much more people can reasonably expect you to do. Forwarding ports will only affect other people on your router who use those ports for whatever reason. If that for some reason is a problem then demigod comes with an executable that lets you change the range of ports it uses.
