I usually compose fleets in a couple different ways... i use pairs of the best destroyers i have to run auto attack randomly spaced in my territories, this seems to help keep the smaller enemy fleets from picking off my constructors, and freighters as often.. then the next most common type is a large or greater defensive based ship for transport escourt.. usually paired up with a destroyer and the transports.. then i have an attack fleet. it usually has
